GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Green Bay swim team was in action on Saturday, hosting Valparaiso at the Peter F. Dorschel Natatorium. GB had solid performances from the men and women. Green Bay defeated Valpo 171-91 on the men’s side while the women handled the Crusaders 165-86.

The Phoenix had first and second-place finishers in the 200 medleys, led by Kaitlyn Sims and Esther Oswald for the women and Sebby Smolecki and Calvin Kremer for the men. Kathryn Fisher dominated the 1000-yard freestyle, taking first by 25 seconds. John Burnard had the same success, winning the men’s 1000-yard freestyle by 18 seconds.

Alexa Kelly led the Phoenix in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:58.91. Green Bay had four in the top six including Kaleigh GaleGrace Morgan, and Caroline RuppAdham ElkassasJack DeMarcoEthan Braatz, and Max Stafford all finished in the top four in the men’s 200-yard freestyle.

Alli Misialek led the GB women in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:17.47. Isabelle Houseman wasn’t far behind with a 2:19.92 time. Burnard also participated in the 200-yard butterfly and posted a winning time of 1:59.03.

Rupp and Kremer took first in the 200-yard backstroke. Rupp recorded a time of 2:16.22, just edging out Valpo’s Sophia H. Morelock, who finished with a time of 2:16.81. Kremer won handily, beating out the Crusaders’ Owen Cullinan, who notched a time of 2:06.80.

Green Bay will visit St. Norbert College in nearby De Pere, Wis., on Saturday, November 12. GB’s next home invitational is Friday, December 9.

Sophomore Bridget Pollard (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) and freshman Jackson Oostman (Aurora, Ill./Marmion Academy) earned individual event victories on Saturday as the Valpo swimming team competed in a dual meet at Green Bay.

How It Happened

  • On the women’s side, Pollard took top honors in the 100 fly with a time of 1:01.08.
  • Meanwhile, on the men’s side, Oostman continued his strong rookie campaign with a narrow victory in the 100 breast, touching the wall in 1:00.53. He added a second-place finish as well with a time of 48.38 in the 100 free.
  • Freshman Garrett Hoppman (Midland, Texas/Midland) recorded a runner-up showing in the 200 fly with a time of 2:00.13.
  • Sophomore Sara Strauss (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake) touched the wall second in both the 20 free (26.11) and the 200 back (2:30.76).
  • The women totaled four runner-up finishes in all, as sophomore Dot Chislett (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area) came home second in the 100 free with a time of 56.24 and senior Sophie Morelock (Milan, Mich./Milan) completed the 200 back in 2:16.81.
  • Green Bay won both team scores, 165-86 on the women’s side and 171-91 on the men’s side.

Valpo returns to the pool for its major midseason meet in two weeks, heading to the SIU Invitational Nov. 10-12.
