In our GMX7 Weekly Wonders of Age Group Swimming series, we celebrate swimmers of every age and experience level with age group profiles of some recent results.
Virginia Hinds, 14, All Star Aquatics (ASA-PV): Hinds put up six new best times at the NOVA Senior Classic Invite last weekend, highlighted by a pair of blistering performances in the backstroke events. Hinds, 14, clocked 54.46 in the 100 back, moving her into 70th all-time in the girls’ 13-14 age group, and in the 200 back, she went 1:58.39 to move into a tie for 90th. Her previous bests stood at 55.62 in the 100 back and 1:59.86 in the 200 back.
Matthew Jiampietro, 14, Nitro Swimming (NTRO-ST): Jiampietro recorded seven lifetime bests at the Longhorn Aquatics’ 11 & Over Fall Kick Off last weekend, showing off impressive versatility. The 14-year-old Nitro Swimming product clocked 1:55.61 in the 200 IM and 4:05.42 in the 400 IM to take over the top spot in the boys’ 13-14 rankings so far in the 2022-23 season, and he also ranks third in the 200 fly (1:56.00). Jiampietro added bests in the 100 back (55.06), 200 back (1:56.09), 100 breast (59.94) and 100 fly (51.97).
Reina Liu, 12, Greensboro Community YMCA (GCY-NC): At the GCY Spooktacular meet last weekend in her home pool, Liu established six lifetime bests while earning a pair of victories competing against several older swimmers. The Greensboro Community YMCA product notably got down to 2:12.80 in the 200 fly, 2:11.80 in the 200 IM and 59.92 in the 100 fly, all eclipsing 800 power points.
Aiden Zhou, 12, Santa Clara Swim Club (SCSC-PC): Zhou had an impressive showing at the QSS/TIDE C/B/A+ meet in San Jose last weekend, hitting four new bests en route to six wins in the boys’ 11-12 age group. The 12-year-old Santa Clara Swim Club member put up notable times in the 50 fly (26.10), 100 fly (57.83) and 50 free (23.91), all ranking in the top 10 this season among 11-12 boys.
Addie Kent, 14, Jupiter High School (UN-FG): Despite being in her freshman year of high school, Kent recorded top-three finishes at the FHSAA 4A Region 2 Championships in the 100 back (57.91) and 200 IM (2:07.58), establishing lifetime bests in both. The 14-year-old heads into the State Championships this weekend holding the #8 seed in the 200 IM and #9 in the 100 back.
Slater Spencer, 10, Waves of Wilmington, Inc. (WOW-NC): Spencer was dominant at the NC BAC Halloween Bash in Bolivia, N.C. over the weekend, hitting seven best times and earning nine victories in the boys’ 9-10 age group. The 10-year-old notably went 5:31.23 in the 500 free, taking more than seven seconds off his previous PB, and also lopped off more than two to crack 2:10 in the 200 free (2:09.44).
