San Jose State hosted Stanford for a women’s dual meet on Friday, falling to the Cardinal in a 162-63 decision. The Stanford freshmen showed up big time for the team, fueling many of their wins.

Of note, star Stanford freshman Claire Curzan did not compete at this meet, though the Cardinal still had plenty of freshmen speed without her.

Charlotte Hook was one of the top freshmen for Stanford, taking the 200 fly and 200 IM on the day. Hook put together a solid 200 fly, clocking a 1:57.73, leading the field by over three seconds. It was fellow freshman Lucy Bell who touched second, swimming a 2:01.13.

Hook then went on to swim a 2:02.74 in the 200 IM, swimming a very well-balanced race. She was 26.91 on fly, 32.00 on back, 35.74 on breast, and 28.09 on free.

Another winning Stanford freshman was Gigi Johnson, who claimed victories in the 200 free and 200 breast. In the 200 free, Johnson swam a 1:48.75, catching teammates Torri Huske and Aurora Roghair on the final 50. Huske finished second in 1:48.80 and Roghair was third with a 1:48.86. Huske and Roghair were out fast, splitting 52.22 and 52.83 respectively on the first 100. They were well ahead of Johnson, who was 54.17 on the opening 100. She cut into her teammates’ leads on the third 50, but really took over on the fourth, splitting a sizzling 27.03, while Huske was 28.37 and Roghair was 27.97.

Johnson then went on to win the 200 breast, swimming a 2:19.09.

Stanford freshman Kirsti McEnroe posted a 50.82 to win the 100 free. She got out ahead of the pack, splitting 24.45 on the first 50, then held onto her lead through the finish. San Jose State’s Reagan Mathieson had a strong swim, clocking a 51.25 for second.

Torri Huske would go on to win the 100 fly, swimming a 53.72. Huske, as always, displayed incredible opening speed, splitting 24.52 on the first 50 of the race.

Alexandra Crisera had a good day in the backstroke events. She started out with a 54.78 in the 100 back, touching just ahead of teammate Janelle Rudolph (55.34). Crisera then posted a 1:57.27 in the 200 back, finishing as the only swimmer in the field under 2:00.

Morgan Tankersley (Stanford) swept the distance events, kicking things off with a 10:11.75 in the 1000 free. She negative split the race, going 5:06.88 on the first 500, then coming home in 5:04.87. In the 500 free, Tankersley clocked a 4:59.05.

Emma Wheal (Stanford) took the 50 free in 22.90, winning the race by over a second.

Sam Todder (Stanford) grabbed a win in the 100 breast, posting a 1:03.97. This was a tight race, as San Jose State’s Cali Rowland touched second in 1:04.04. Tadder led Rowland by 0.10 seconds at the 50m turn, and Rowland slightly out-split Tadder on the last 50, but it wasn’t enough.

Interesting that the monster freshman class is almost entirely from the Mid Atlantic area.

I’m always looking to see how my home state favorite Claire Curzan swims. But she does not appear on the San Jose St meet results. I hope there is no obstacle to her swimming out a great freshman campaign.
