The third day of the 2022 French Elite SC Championships saw another national record go down. Charlotte Bonnet, who has recently shifted into a breaststroke focus, at least for SCM racing, downed another French Record, this time in the women’s 200 breast.
Bonnet clocked a 2:21.34, speeding to victory by over four seconds. She dipped under the record, which stood at 2:21.55 from Sophie de Ronchi in 2008. With the performance, Bonnet took the second-oldest SC women’s French Record off the books.
Bonnet was out fast, swimming a 1:07.29 on the first 100. She faded a bit, going 1:14.05 on the second 100, but it was still enough to get the job done.
The performance marks Bonnet’s second French Record of these Championships, with the first coming on Friday in the 100 breast. She notably just missed the 50 breast national record on Thursday by 0.02 seconds.
Maxime Grousset claimed victory in the men’s 200 free, swimming a 1:42.09. Grousset jumped out to an early lead, splitting 49.06 on the opening 100.
Melanie Henique grabbed a win in the women’s 50 free, clocking a 23.95 to beat out Marie Wattel (24.39). It was a solid swim for Henique, who holds the French Record in the event at 23.61.
Thomas Piron took the men’s 50 fly in 22.86, narrowly beating out Stanislas Huille, who finished second in 22.97.
There was a tight finish in the men’s 400 IM, seeing Emilien Mattenet touch first in 4:08.16, followed closely by Tom Remy in 4:08.22. They traded the lead back-and-forth, with Remy splitting 56.29 on fly to Mattenet’s 57.12. Mattenet then took over the lead, splitting 1:02.62 on back, over a second faster than Remy’s 1:03.91. Remy took back over on breaststroke, vastly out-splitting Mattenet with a 1:09.94 (Mattenet 1:11.73). Mattenet closed fast, splitting 56.69 on the final 100, catching Remy, who split 58.08, and managing to get his hand on the wall first.
Pauline Mahieu won the women’s 100 back, swimming a 57.30. She beat out Analia Pigree, who has been a rising backstroke star. Pigree took second, swimming a 57.98. Pigree was out faster, splitting 27.73 to Matheiu’s 27.88. Mathieu closed much better, however, pulling away from Pigree.
The women’s 200 fly saw Lilou Ressencourt win a close race. She got out to a lead, splitting 1:01.84 on the first 100, ahead of Lara Grangeon (1:03.28) and Tabatha Avetand (1:02.34). Ressencourt was able to hold onto her lead, finishing first in 2:09.02, with Grangeon right behind in 2:09.32 and Avetand next in 2:09.95.
Carl Aitkaci won the men’s 100 breast in a new personal best of 57.58.
