Miressi, Cocconcelli & Cerasuolo Shine On Day 1 of Italian SC Championships

2022 Italian Short Course Swimming Championships

The Italian Short Course Championships kicked off on Thursday in Riccione, with the two-day event serving as the final qualifying opportunity for the Short Course World Championships next month in Melbourne, Australia.

Some swimmers have already pre-qualified to represent Italy at SC Worlds by virtue of their performances at the 2022 World Championships (individual medal) and 2022 European Championships (individual gold).

Pre-Qualified Swimmers

The competition is being raced in a timed finals format across four sessions.

DAY 1 MORNING HIGHLIGHTS

The opening session saw a pair of swimmers secure their spot at the World Championships, as Simone Cerasuolo confirmed his spot in the men’s 50 breast and Matteo Ciampi did the same in the men’s 400 free.

Cerasuolo, who is tied for #1 in the world this season in the 50 breast with his time of 25.78 from last week’s Nico Sapio Trophy, put up a 25.90 clocking in Riccione to maintain the top spot in the country and qualify for Worlds. Veteran Fabio Scozzoli took second in 26.18, just over the qualifying standard of 26.09.

Ciampi, who ripped a 3:37.86 in the 400 free at the Nico Sapio Trophy, won that event in 3:39.31 to confirm his spot at Worlds, edging out Marco de Tullio (3:39.89).

Although she is pre-qualified, Benedetta Pilato picked up a victory in the women’s 100 breast, clocking in at 1:04.66. Pilato set her best time of 1:03.55 during the second ISL season in November 2020.

DAY 1 EVENING HIGHLIGHTS

Five more swimmers booked their spot at Worlds during the second session in the evening, including two coming from both the men’s 100 free and women’s 200 IM.

Alessandro Miressi, the reigning short course world champion in the men’s 100 free, touched first in that event in a time of 46.41, winning a tight race over Paolo Conte Bonin (46.46), who shattered his previous best of 46.91. Both managed to get under the 46.69 standard and qualify for Worlds.

Miressi won the world title last December in a time of 45.57, which currently stands as the Italian National Record.

In the women’s 200 IM, Costanza Cocconcelli went well under her best time of 2:08.59 in 2:07.12 to win gold and qualify for Worlds, and joining her was Sara Franceschi (2:07.38), who also booked a ticket to Melbourne with a new best time. Ilaria Cusinato (2:08.00) was also under the qualifying time but misses out as she finished third.

Also securing a spot in Melbourne on Thursday was Lorenzo Mora, who made some noise last week at the Nico Sapio Trophy, breaking a pair of national records in the men’s backstroke events. Those performances all but qualified him for Worlds, but his 100 back victory locked that in, as he touched in a time of 49.98, leading runner-up Matteo Rivolta (50.40).

Mora set a new Italian Record of 49.37 last week, ranking him second in the world this season.

Pre-qualified swimmers who earned wins during the night session were Simona Quadarella in the women’s 800 free (8:15.01) and Alberto Razzetti in the men’s 200 fly (1:52.49).
