Rather than being demolished to make room for a parking lot ahead of the 2016 Olympic, Rio de Janiero’s Julio Delamare Aquatics Center, one of the most vital pieces in the country’s sporting infrastructure, will receive a $1 million renovation.
After repeated lobbying by CBDA president Coarcy Nunes, trying to save both the pool and the primary offices of the Brazilian swimming federation, the pool’s fate as a parking lot for the Maracana stadium, a huge 78,000 seat outdoor arena that will play a pivotal roll in both the 2014 soccer World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics
Among the upgrades will be a new paint job, repair of some leaks, a brand new set of blocks, and a brand new diving well to replace one that was previously paved over as parking. The pool will remain closed for 6 months to complete the rehaul, with bidding to begin in two weeks.
The good thing: they will put a set of Omega blocks there.Only Maria Lenk complex have that in Brazil.
