Rasovszky Scores Hungarian Record In 800 Freestyle

2022 HUNGARIAN SHORT COURSE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Racing on the final day of competition at these Hungarian Short Course Championships, Kristof Rasovszky posted a new national record in the men’s 800m freestyle.

Rasovszky put up a time of 7:39.21 to get to the wall first, beating out runner-up David Betlehem in the close race. Betlehem settled for silver in 7:39.54 while Zalan Sarkany rounded out the top 3 in a mark of 7:43.06.

The previous Hungarian standard stood at the 7:39.56 Gergely Gyurta put on the books at the 2018 edition of these championships. Gyurta actually just retired this year, making his announcement late last month

As for Rasovszky, his career-quickest in this 8free event entering this meet rested at the 7:43.70 he logged at the 2021 Hungarian Short Course Championships. As such, the 25-year-old managed to hack over nearly 4 seconds off of that result to get grab his first Hungarian national record.

On his performance tonight, Rasovszky stated, “I really wanted to win today, because I have to show the young people that I’m here too, even if it’s getting harder to deal with them, (Betlehem) Dávid in particular, but (Sárkány) Zalán is also getting better and better.”

Rasovszky is also formidable in the open water, having won the silver the men’s 10k event at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.
