EASTON, Pa. – The Lafayette swimming and diving team battled hard against its rival Lehigh on Friday night. The men lost a very close meet by a score of 152-136, and the women fell by a score of 219-80. There were several pool records broken during the meet, including three from sophomore Peter Kawash.
Kawash set Lafayette pool records in three different events. Kawash placed first and broke the pool record in the 100-yard backstroke (49.51), the 200-yard backstroke (1:49.38) and the 200-yard individual medley (1:51.18). Freshman Isabella Van Ess. Van Ess set a school record in the 200-yard breaststroke, posting a time of 2:21.61. The Mountain Hawks took home seven Weinstein Natatorium pool records in a competitive evening on College Hill, respectively.
“This meet is always crazy fast,” said Lafayette head coach James Dailey. “This meet always brings out the best in everyone. We performed very well and the student-athletes have nothing to feel bad about. Sure it’s tough losing by 16 on the men’s side but our times still speak for themselves,” Dailey said. “This was a good chance for both teams to see where they are with their training and make changes over the next two months to be ready for the Patriot League Championships. What I found was our women’s team never gives up and they want to come back and perform better in the very next race, and with the men’s team I found out we love to race. Several were very close finishes and could have gone either way.”
Some other notable finishes include sophomore Andrew Campbell who placed first in the 500-yard freestyle (4:39.24). Classmate Sean Robinson managed first place in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:07.76). The men’s 100-yard freestyle was won by senior Aaron Tupper who swam a time of 45.70.
Freshman Aidan Boudreaux secured nine points in the 3-meter diving after posting a score of 201.45 earning him first place. Sophomore Shaylee Daniels also secured nine points in the women’s 3-meter diving with her first-place finish (230.85).
“It was a great day for Lafayette Swimming and Diving. We had a great meet,” Dailey said. “One of our swimmers, Javier Fente ’95 was inducted into the Hall of Fame today and we are still doing really well in the Bring the Roar challenge.”
The Maroon and White will have some time off to train before competing at Rider on Jan. 14 at 1 p.m.
