Five Swimmers Scratch ‘B’ Finals To Avoid Doubles On Day 3 of U.S. Open

2022 U.S. OPEN SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

There were no ‘A’ final scratches for the third night of action at the 2022 U.S. Open in Greensboro, though six swimmers did drop out of a consolation final, five of which in order to avoid racing a double.

The top-seeded swimmer to scratch was 16-year-old Leah Shackley, who drops out of the women’s 100 fly ‘B’ final after tying for ninth in the heats in a time of 1:00.62. Also withdrawing from the final was Miranda Tucker, who tied for 14th in 1:01.33.

Shackley will race in the ‘A’ final of the 100 back, having established a best time of 1:01.08 this morning, while Tucker will contest the ‘A’ final of the 100 breast after qualifying third out of the heats.

These scratches moved Leah Gingrich (1:01.47) and Miriam Guevara (1:01.49) into the 100 fly consolation final.

The other event with two top-16 scratches was the women’s 100 breast, where Sarah Foley (tied for 12th in 1:10.24) and Jhennifer Conceicao (14th in 1:10.29) have dropped out.

Foley will instead race the ‘A’ final of the 200 free, having qualified eighth this morning in a new PB of 2:01.87.

Bradi Jones (1:11.00) and Katja Pavicevic (1:11.04) have been bumped up into the ‘B’ final.

The other scratches among swimmers in the first flight of the session were from Aidan Stoffle in the men’s 100 fly (10th in 53.52) and Camille Spink in the women’s 100 back (14th in 1:02.82).

Stoffle will contest the ‘A’ final of the men’s 100 back, while Spink will swim the ‘B’ final of the women’s 200 free.

Boyd Poelke (men’s 100 fly) and Maria Luiza Pessanha (women’s 100 back) have been elevated into the ‘B’ final.
