2022 Hawkeye Invite: Rutgers Breaks Two Program Records

2022 HAWKEYE INVITE

Last night was the second finals session of the 2022 Hawkeye Invite. Yesterday’s events included the 200 medley relay, 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 back, 100 breast, and 800 free relay. Nebraska continues to build a commanding lead in the team standings, while Rutgers moved ahead of Illinois by a slim margin of 4.5 points.

Team Standings Through Day 2:

  1. Nebraska – 635.5
  2. Rutgers – 495.5
  3. Illinois – 491
  4. Iowa – 440.5
  5. Northern Iowa – 15.5

Rutgers opened the night with a dominating performance in the 200 medley relay. The quartet of Alice Scarabelli (24.85), Rachel Kimmel (27.98), Sofia Lobova (23.62), and Sofia Chichaikina (22.50) touched first with a new program record of 1:38.95, nearly two seconds ahead of 2nd-place Iowa.

Iowa’s team of Kennedy Gilbertson (25.21), Sheridan Schreiber (28.05), Scarlet Martin (23.85), and Maddie Black (23.64) combined for the 10th-fastest time in program history with a 1:40.75.

Martin won the 100 fly shortly after, where she swam a season best time of 53.84 to become the 5th-fastest performer in Iowa’s program history. Although it wasn’t a personal best time, it was the fastest she has been since arriving at Iowa this fall.

Junior Cara Bognar was the Illini’s lone event winner tonight, as she took 1st in the 400 IM. Bognar clocked a personal best time of 4:16.86, which dips her under the NCAA ‘B’ cut in the event is the third-fastest time in program history in the event. Teammate Sara Jass took 5th in the event with a personal best time of 4:19.16, good for the 6th-fastest time in program history.

Rutgers’ Chichaikina took first in the 200 free with a season best time of 1:47.37. Nebraska’s Shannon Stott was close behind, clocking a personal best time of 1:47.72 to take 2nd. She was followed by teammates Alexa Kucera (1:48.47), and Genevieve Jorgensen (1:49.03), who both posted personal best times as well.

Senior Rachel Kimmel added another program record for the Scarlet Knights, as she won the 100 breaststroke with a personal best time of 1:00.22, over half a second faster than the previous record set in 2016.

Rutgers’ Alice Scarabelli took the top spot in the 100 back in a near-best time of 53.31. Iowa’s Gilbertson took 2nd with a 53.31, while Nebraska’s Madesyn Ronquillio took 3rd in at 54.97.

Nebraska ended the night with a dominating performance in the 800 free relay. The team of Guilia Marchi (1:50.38), Jorgensen (1:50.06), Stott (1:47.69), and Kucera (1:48.11) touched first at a 7:16.24, over 14 seconds ahead of 2nd-place Illinois (7:30.70).

Today the meet will conclude with the 1650, 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly, and 400 freestyle relay.
