The 2022 Queensland Championships kicked off today from Brisbane with club and regional relays taking to the pool.
Right off the bat, we saw St. Peters Western take the women’s open 200m free club relay title in a time of 1:41.24, beating out runners-up Griffith University and Rackley Swim Team who tied at 1:42.83 for silver.
Shayna Jack led the SPW squad off with a solid 24.66 to grab the lead while Brianna Throssell was next with a 25.45 leg. Olympic champion Ariarne Titmus continued the speed with a 3rd leg of 25.65 while Stefanie McCarthy brought home the win in 25.48.
As for Griffith, the fastest split came from lead-off Rebecca St. Vincent who got to the wall in 25.37 while Rackley saw anchor Rebecca Jacobson clock 25.47 as their fastest athlete to help her team score silver.
Although Titmus is entered in a number of events here at these Queensland Championships, the 22-year-old is slated to be in the announcers’ booth at the FINA Short Course World Championships which begin on December 13th.
The men’s open 200m free club relay also saw St. Peters Western snag the victory, with Chandler wrapping up silver and Griffith rounding out the top 3 squads.
Collectively clocking a time of 1:30.67, Jamie Jack led off in 22.79 for SPW while Jack Cartwright was next in 22.51. World Champion Elijah Winnington was their 3rd swimmer in 22.66 while Kai Taylor ensured the win with a 22.71 anchor.
The story was the same in the club medleys, with SPW taking the gold in both the women’s and men’s editions of that event.
Jaclyn Barclay (28.46), Abbey Harkin (31.95), Throssell (27.26) and Jack (24.07) combined to clock a winning time of 1:51.74 while the men’s relay posted a time of 1:41.61 for the victory.
In the latter, Cartwright hit 26.74 then handed the lead off to Joshua Staples (28.02), while Thomas Nankervis (24.68) and Jack (22.17) helped ensure they continued the speed until the gold was ensured.
