Ilya Kharun Hits Second 50 Butterfly World Junior Record In As Many Swims With 22.28

2022 FINA SHORT COURSE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

For the second time in as many swims, Ilya Kharun has broken the world junior record in the boys’ 50 butterfly. During semi-finals at the 2022 Short Course World Championships, Kharun swam a 22.28 to undercut his own world junior record of 22.32 from the prelims. That time is not only a WJR but also a new Canadian record, which he already held in the event at a 22.47 from earlier this year.

The world junior record holder heading into this meet was a 22.34 by Andrei Minakov from 2020, meaning that Kharun has now improved upon the mark by 0.06. Kharun is newly representing Canada internationally, having been named to the USA’s Junior Pan Pacs roster earlier this year before it was revealed that he was born in Canada.

Despite his world-record-breaking swim, Kharun will actually have to swim again in order to determine whether he’ll race in the final for Canada. Kharun’s 22.28 was fast enough to tie Estonia’s Daniel Zaitsev for 8th place, necessitating a swim-off. That’s the second time that Kharun has tied for 8th in this event at this meet considering that he and Matteo Rivolta both swam a 22.32 to tie for 8th in the prelims.

Rivolta was disqualified from the semi-finals, while Szebasztian Szabo lead the field during semis with a 21.90, followed by Dylan Carter with a 22.02 and Noe Ponti with his 22.04. The 50 butterfly final will be swum of day 2 finals.

Kharun is also entered to race the 100 and 200 butterfly for Canada at this meet and can potentially be expected to contest a couple relays for the nation over the next few days.
