The Hurricanes enjoyed a number of strong individual performances over the course of the day, including first-place finishes from freshman Celina Kuehne, sophomore Giulia Carvalho and veteran captain Zorry Mason.
Kuehne delivered the Hurricanes’ first top time of the day in her signature 50-yard backstroke event, finishing in a time of 25.78. Carvalho added a first-place performance in the 50-yard freestyle (23.53) while Mason won the 100-yard IM (57.18).
Kuehne won her heat and took second overall in the 150-yard backstroke (1:29.44) while Mason was third in the 150-yard breaststroke (1:40.47).
The Hurricanes’ top entry in the 1,000-yard freestyle crescendo relay took second, with Aino Otava, Adrianna Cera, Savannah Barr and Jacey Hinton finishing in a time of 9:37.57.
Carvalho picked up an additional win in the 50-yard butterfly (24.89), while Mason was Miami’s top finisher in the “mystery” 200 IM, where each swimmer competed with a different order of the four strokes.
Miami’s entry in another unconventional event – this one the 8×50 freestyle relay – took second, with Hinton, Carvalho, Jane Fitzgerald and Emma Sundstrand leading the way for the Hurricanes.
The Hurricanes return to the Whitten Pool on Jan. 4 with a meet against Boston College and SMU.

Coach’s Corner
“Today’s meet was a lot of fun and a great opportunity to take a break from training camp and race against two very competitive power 5 programs.
We swam “fun” events, but the team still showed up to compete and do their best. Coming off TEEs and a couple weeks of tough training, it was a good reminder of what we need to do when we race, to be at our best. We’re excited to get back to work tomorrow morning and work on some of the details that were missing today.
Congrats to Jacob Powell for setting an Academy Record in the 100 IM.”— Head Coach Brandt Nigro
