CHARLOTTE, N.C. – After a heartfelt celebration of the many seniors in this year’s upcoming graduating class, Queens men’s and women’s swimming concluded their home schedule with a victory over Lenoir Rhyne. The men’s side managed a 176-63 point total, while the women’s won with a score of 156-96.

One of those seniors, Monica Gumina, had a flawless day in the pool. She began the meet swimming a 24.9 in the third leg of the first-place 200 yard medley relay. She followed that up with another top spot in the 100 yard back, finishing at 57.10. In her third event of the evening, the 100 yard fly, she touched the wall at 55.81 to earn her third victory of the day, second individually.

Giulia Grasso, another lady in her final season, competed in both the 50 and 200 yard freestyles. She dashed to a first-place time of 1:53.66 in the 200, taking first place in that event. In the 50 free, she touched the wall at 24.82 to take third; one of three Royals who finished in the top three in that event.

On the men’s side, senior Alex Kunert posted impressive times to earn a multitude of points for the Royals. Much like Gumina, he too swam the third leg of the 200 yard medley relay at 21.93 and helped his quartet to a first-place time of 1:29.85. Later in the meet, he took the pool yet again for the 100 yard fly, coming in at 49.18 and earning his third victory of the evening.

In the distance events, senior Luke Erwee competed in both the 500 and 1000 freestyles, keeping great pace throughout both which propelled him to two victories. He touched the wall at 4:37.15 in the 500 free, and would finish at 9:33.39 in the 1000 free.

Senior Kimani Gregory also managed to grab a nice chunk of points for Queens, taking the top spot in the 50 free (21.24) while finishing second in the 200 yard medley relay (1:31.38).

The Royals will conclude the rest of their season on the road. Tomorrow, they head down to South Carolina to take on Gardner-Webb with the first event beginning at 11 AM.
