UMBC Women, Howard Men Pick Up Wins In Split Dual

WASHINGTON, D.C. –  Returning from their spring training trip in Florida, the women’s swimming and diving team took on Howard University at Burr Gym Pool on January 14. The Retrievers edged the Bison, 129-112.

UMBC captured six swimming events as junior Makaela Hill led the way with a pair of victories for the visitors. The Catonsville native captured the 50 freestyle (24.32) and came back to win the 100 freestyle (53.88), Classmate Roaa Farag placed second in 100 free.

Senior Makayla Ludwick earned gold in the 1000 freestyle (10:52.29) and finished second in 500 freestyle (5:21.15). Sophomore Loujy Abdellitif captured 100 butterfly, touching the wall under the minute-mark at 59.58.

Graduate student Caroline Sargent led a 1-2 effort in the 100 backstroke, triumphing in a time of 58.82, ahead of junior teammate Nyah Stahl, who placed second in 1:00.22.

Senior Alexis Bruington captured the 1-meter diving event, edging Howard’s Teyana Johnson, 194.78-194.52.

UMBC capped the meet by winning the 200 freestyle relay.  Rola HusseinSierra Tosten, Ludwick and  Hill edged Howard by less than .3 of a second to triumph in a time of 1:39.89.

Graduate student Tiago Asakawa earned UMBC’s lone gold in swimming as he triumphed in the 50 freestyle (21.16).

The Retrievers captured both diving events. Freshman Anders Logas won the 1-meter event with a total score of 230.37, while senior Will Henrickson took the 3-meter board, amassing 267.45 points.

The Retrievers hauled in six silvers versus a strong Bison squad:
