David Curtiss, Gretchen Walsh Named ACC Swimmers of the Week

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – NC State’s David Curtiss earned his first ACC Men’s Swimmer of the Week award while Virginia’s Gretchen Walsh notched her second ACC Women’s Swimmer of the Week nod. NC State’s Bayne Bennett and North Carolina’s Anton Down-Jenkins shared ACC Men’s Co-Divers of the Week and North Carolina’s Aranza Vazquez earned her fourth ACC Women’s Diver of the Week honor.

ACC MEN’S SWIMMER OF THE WEEK
David Curtiss, NC State, So., Yardley, Penn.
Curtiss led No. 4 NC State to a tri-meet victory over No. 14 Virginia and RV North Carolina in the 50 free with a 19.28 – the fastest in the ACC and seventh fastest in the NCAA. He also claimed another individual win in the 100 free with a time of 43.36, along with victories in the 200 free and 200 medley relays. The sophomore earned four NCAA “B” times while the 200 free relay qualified as a NCAA “A” time. Curtiss swam a 19.33 leadoff leg in the 200 free relay for the Wolfpack who finished in 1:16.31.

ACC WOMEN’S SWIMMER OF THE WEEK
Gretchen Walsh, Virginia, So., Nashville, Tenn.
Walsh posted six NCAA “A” zone qualifying times in No. 1 Virginia’s tri-meet with No. 4 NC State and No. 18 North Carolina, winning both her individual events and four relay events. The Nashville, Tenn. native posted the fastest time in the NCAA in the 100 backstroke as a part of the 400 medley relay with a 50.07. She posted the 11th fastest time in the NCAA in the 50 free while also owning the first, second, fourth, sixth, and eighth-through-11th fastest times in the same event. The sophomore was also a part of three top-10 fastest relays in the NCAA over the weekend – 200 free relay (1:27.46), 200 medley relay (1:35.71) and the 400 free relay (3:14.45)

ACC MEN’S CO-DIVERS OF THE WEEK
Bayne Bennett, NC State, Sr., Southern Pines, N.C.

Bennett helped lead the No. 4 Wolfpack to wins over Virginia and North Carolina with a win on the 1-meter dive with his ACC-leading score of 368.70 and a new personal best of 372.25 on the 3-meter. His 1-meter score ranks 22nd in the NCAA and his 3-meter score sits fourth in the ACC. The senior earned NCAA zone scores on both dives.

Anton Down-Jenkins, North Carolina, Sr., Wellington, New Zealand
Down-Jenkins recorded the highest score in the NCAA this season on the 3-meter with his 461.05. He set the UNC record in the event, downing his previous best of 450.05. The senior added a podium finish in the 1-meter with a 360.35. Both dives qualified as NCAA zone scores.

ACC WOMEN’S DIVER OF THE WEEK
Aranza Vazquez, North Carolina, Sr., La Paz, Mexico

Vazquez swept the diving events in No. 18 North Carolina’s tri-meet with No. 1 Virginia and No. 4 NC State. She topped the podium with a UNC-record breaking, NCAA-leading 3-meter score of 409.60. The senior is the only diver in D1 to break 400 points this season. She earned two NCAA zone qualifying scores with her 1-meter 319.00 score.
