Olympic swimming superstar Katie Ledecky loves Christmas Training. No surprises there. She’s a grinder, but does she have bad swim practices, and how does she handle them?
When Gators training partner and Olympic distance star Bobby Finke was asked about this, he just laughed, “oh, we have a lot of head-in-the-shower practices.”
Katie details a few tough workouts–sets where she actually missed her intervals.
Katie’s got 18 months under her belt in Florida, in her new pro-training environment. It’s too early for predictions, but Katie’s so consistent I think we can play the game. We can adjust as we move through the season.
Katie Ledecky 2023 World Championship Predictions.
- 1500 free – At 2022 Worlds she was a 15:30. At 2023 Worlds I see 15:28 for gold.
- 800 free – At 2022 Worlds Ledecky ripped 8:08. At 2023 Worlds she’s improves on that swim with 8:07 for the gold.
- 400 free – At 2022 Worlds Ledecky was a 3:58.1. At 2023 Worlds, in the most exciting race of the competition, she’s a 3:57.3 for the silver. Australia’s Ariarne Titmus wins by a fingernail. Canada’s Summer McIntosh takes the bronze, stopping the clock with a new PB, 3:57.5.

Katie Ledecky has bad practices? I thought she was superhuman?
I think if ledecky gonna swim the 200 in Paris she should swim it this year just to see where she at against international competition
As long as she has the 1500 in her schedule she will have enough speed for the 200
Well that’s embarrassing lol, makes me look like a dumbass (which I am). I meant that she will NOT have enough speed.
…I knew what you meant…
Katie, if you ever have trouble dealing with a bad practice, remember it would probably be the best practice of my life 😄
Surprisingly reasonable predictions.
Honestly don’t know at this time who is going to win the 400, and you wouldn’t be wrong to pick any of the three. Titmus, world record holder, closer to her prime age than the other two, and has stated that she will have to go with a different strategy than Tokyo to win again. Ledecky, the GOAT, will probably attack the race early and be right there at the finish. McIntosh, sort of a wild card being that she is still so very young with plenty of untapped potential. Described by her coaches as very deliberate and methodical so you know she will most likely stick to her race plan which I believe will be similar to what we… Read more »
Hard to argue with this.
I think on women’s side it’s 400 free, 100 fly is the race to watch where the winners is not easy to predicts.
I say McIntosh touches for the gold, respectfully sir 🙂
Titmus will win
common people on Christmas training: @_@
Katie on Christmas training: I really love Christmas training, it’s the time of year where I really start, bad practice happened to all of us, 400fly was fun, it makes fly in 400im easy .. 🙂 🙂 🙂
…who did triple during xmas training? That’s the real question. (Gen Xers from the 1980s-90s can share their trauma…)
I remember one particularly hellacious winter training Friday-Saturday that coincided with a lock-in. 4:30-6:00am practice, 12:00-1:00pm running and other aerobic dry side exercises, 3:00-4:00pm weights, 4:00-6:00pm practice, 11:00pm-1:30am practice, then capped off with a 7:00-9:30am practice Saturday morning.
It was awful!
…pain creates team cohesion….too many coaches said in the 1970s and 1980s…
Always team Ledecky.
