For the third year in a row, Indiana swimmer Brendan Burns is the recipient of the Big Ten championships swimmer of the meet award. This year, he earned this award based on his individual title wins in the 100 back, 200 back, and 200 fly, as well as his contributions towards Indiana’s title-winning 800 free and 400 medley relays.
The most impressive feat that Burns completed in his Big Tens run was his 200 back and 200 fly double, as he won both events on the same night and set NCAA-leading times in each race. Burns has completed this double three years in a row, claiming first in both the 200 back and 200 fly every time he’s it. However, at NCAAs, he has historically dropped the 200 back, opting for the less grueling 100 fly/100 back double on day three instead.
Burns was the only athlete at Big Tens to go three for three in individual events.

- 50 Back: 21.58
- 100 Back: 44.65 (season-best)
- 200 Back: 1:38.22 (personal best, #1 in the NCAA)
- 200 Fly: 1:39.51 (season-best #1 in the NCAA)
- 200 Free Relay Split: 1:32.03
Burns’s teammates Andrew Capobianco and Carson Tyler won the co-divers of the championship award. Capobianco, a fifth year, won the three-meter diving events and took third in the one-meter and platform diving events, while Tyler, the sophomore, won the one-meter and platform events while taking ninth in the three-meter.
Michigan’s Eitan Ben-Shitrit won the freshman of the year award. He finished third in the 400 IM (3:43.49), third in the 200 IM (1:43.31), and 12th in the 200 back (1:42.88), setting personal bests in all three events. In total, he scored 69 individual points, which was the most out of any freshman swimmer at the meet.
All awards were voted on by head coaches throughout the conference.
The Indiana men won their second-straight and 29th overall Big Ten Championship title at the 2023 rendition of the meet, scoring 1,595.5 total points.

would love to see him have similar success in the long pool. He’s still got time.
Some people just aren’t LC swimmers. There’s no shame in that. Coleman Stewart’s LC career is probably best case scenario for Burns if he really pursues that path, but he’s got a ways to go to get there.

Can’t imagine how cooked his legs must be after that second 200.
I wonder if he’ll drop the 200 back for the 100 fly given how stacked the 100 fly is. Hitting a PB in the 200 back has to fell good going towards NCAAs. I don’t see him winning either but he’s could place better in the 200 back
It’s weighing that he’s got a great chance to repeat in the 200 fly, but I think 200 back probably probably takes a bit out of him for that, versus being a lock for top 3 in the 200 BK and finishing 9th last year in the 100 fly despite a great swim. 4 guys who finished behind him last year in the 200 fly are all gone so maybe he can win it regardless of the fatigue.
With the team race their in I’d guess they take the sure points and go the dirty double.
although unlikely, i selfishly want to see Burns pull the 2 back/2 fly double at NCs.
1 fly is superrrr crowded this year and burns would get guaranteed top 3 in both 2 back and 2 fly at NCs while being lucky to A final in 1 fly
I don’t know if I’d say lucky to A final in the 1 fly – but generally agree – would place higher in the 200s. He really needs to lead off that 200 Medley as well.
6 guys who finished ahead of him are returning and Crooks and Liendo have been added to the mix. I’d bet that he’s a top 8 100 flyer this year, but it’s basically a coin flip.
He’ll definitely lead off the 200 medley. Was faster to his feet in the 100 than their leadoff at B1Gs.
