On night 2 of the Pro Swim in Ft Lauderdale, Summer McIntosh (coming off of a 54.54 in the 100 free) threw it down in the 200 fly, breaking the US Open, Canadian, and world jr records. In her post-race interview, she describes the mindset she feels one must have in order to properly approach the 200 fly, as well as how she’s been training lately and why she took a hiatus from racing the event.
She sounds like a 25 year old postgrad.
Summer shouldn’t be allowed to talk about anything “from a young age.” She’s a young age right now.
She was like this at 10 🙂 Incredibly mature person!
Summer McIntosh will win 200 fly gold in Fukuoka and Paris
i know McIntosh’s swim gets the hype (rightfully so), but Sims’s swim was also huge. we take sub 2:10’s for granted, but that’s so elite. especially given this is in season, i see her going 2:07/2:08 at trials this year. she’s gonna have to chose between the 8FR and 2FL, but ron always makes the right decisions for his athletes
McIntosh just won the race by over 4 seconds and set a bunch of records, becoming the #11 performer of all time. Sims’s swim doesn’t even put her in the top 200 performers or top 500 performances of all time. Nothing wrong with recognising her swim but acting like it’s some huge omission that people aren’t jumping up and down about it is pretty ridiculous
Just some context. In 1979, then 14 y/o Mary T won the Pan Pacs in a then WR 2:09.77. Two years later, age 16 Madame Butterfly swam a 2:05.96. Did it with no goggles, “unsuited”, no underwaters, and an old school cap.
We’re so fortunate we can watch that swim on YouTube! Wonderful technique.
If only there was 4K HDR in 1981.
