Leon Marchand broke the NCAA record in the 200 Breast, making it his 2nd NCAA record of the weekend. Take a look at what we saw in the 3x NCAA Champion’s masterful race that cracked the 6-year-old record held by former Texas Longhorn Will Licon.
We are left with 2 questions:
- How fast will Leon Marchand go at NCAAs in all 3 of his individual events?
- How high in the standings can Leon lead his ASU team at NCAAs?
For NCAAs I’m thinking 1:37 low, 3:30 something, and 1:47 low. The clock is ticking for the 400IM LCM WR!
1:36 200 IM, 3:29 400 IM, 1:46 200 breast
thinking ahead here….does Marchand take next year off from college competitions, and focus 100% on LC for the Olympics? I think he does, but I also think he stays at ASU to train..
Only if it makes a significant monetary difference turning pro. Training wise they will do more longcourse workouts throughout the season in the olympic year like most colleges with that level of athletes do. Also, in his case, he does not even need to really taper for NCAAs in order to win his events and contribute to a possible all time finish at NCAAs as a team for their program
Good points. I’m laughing reading “does not really need to taper for NCAA’s to win his events”- might be the only swimmer in recent memory who can actually train through NCAA’s. Unreal. So much fun to watch.
He has the added boost of not having to taper for his Olympic trials so NCAA’s won’t overload his competition season
I think he will go pro after this year. He’s going to set records that won’t be touched for a long time in the NCAA, but he stands to make MILLIONS in endorsements as the successful poster boy of a home country Olympics. He’ll stay at ASU and focus on long course competition a la Regan Smith. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to peak in front of a home crowd.
You don’t fix what ain’t broke. I think we are in the “peak Leon” era right now maybe for 2-3 years. I’m sure he is hyper motivated for Paris Olympics. It really doesn’t matter what he does for the next 18 months he is going to crush it.
I would love to see what other records he could break if he tapered. 500 free? 200 fly? 100 breast?
Also he has the same stroke count as Reece, who is 9 INCHES TALLER.
How tall is Leon?
6’1?
6 ft.
6.2
I found out that he grew taller after going to asu.
I see 6 feet in Wikipedia but he was previously listed at 6,2 in the same Wikipedia. He looks taller than 6 feet though.
I hear he grew after joining ASU.
It means that he is significantly better at Breastroke than Phelps and has a real shot of breaking the LCM 400IM record this summer. Long term he could go a decent chunk under 4.03.8 but it depends on what his targets are. He would need to be fresh so Paris next year is more likely than worlds. I think if he sticks to no more than four events at worlds he can still get the WR.
The 400 IM will be on the first day again for the WC, he is definitely breaking it this summer and pushing it to no mans land next summer
it means hes f*&*^ fast.
Slow down. Slow down. I like your posts Coleman but don’t get carried away. I’m a super fan of Léon. I follow his career for 4 years. But 1’45” in the 200 breast!!! Wouah. It’s freaking out. 1’47 low, OK. 1’37’ ‘ low in the 2 IM, I’ll buy it. I think he’ s capable of destroying the 3’31” barrier in the 4 IM. But A sub 3’30”? You work quickly. I hope he’ll lead his team to the victory at the NCAA’s.
But I’m looking forward to observing him in LCM in April. He made big progress this year.
I’m confident for the 4 IM WR. Carson Foster will drive him to the wall. About the 2… Read more »
Just a reminder that Léon broke his PB in the 200m breaststroke at the 2022 Spanish Championships without much competition to push him and he was certainly tired because it was just a few weeks after the Worlds in Budapest. In optimal conditions, he must be able to currently swim in a range of 2’06″80-2’07″50 in LCM to me. So yeah, strong competition with ZSC in Fukuoka is not very likely. But I do not exclude anything for Paris 2024, especially at home and in optimal conditions. Let’s see how far he can go!
I don’t think ZSC is so out of reach as others seem to.. he is the man to beat but there have been a lot of people within a second of that record (or within 1.5s) over the past several years… you can’t say that about Milak. If Leon wants another gold, breaststroke is definitely his best opening.
don’t think Leon can beat Zac in the 200 breaststroke at paris。You must know that the short course yard and the long course meter are completely different. Sometimes the difference will be like another sport. The underwater that Leon is good at plays the biggest role in the short course.
that means 1.05.7 breast split.
by end of 2023, breaks 4.03 twice.
next year, at his homeland dips under 4′.
