Charlotte Bonnet Clocks French Record In LCM 100 Breaststroke

2023 GIANT OPEN FINALE (FRA)

While competing on day 2 of the 2023 Giant Open in her native France, 28-year-old Charlotte Bonnet produced a new national record in the 100m breaststroke.

Bonnet stopped the clock in a time of 1:07.76 to shave .21 off of the previous French standard of 1:07.97. Sophie De Ronchi put that former mark on the books at the 2011 French Championships.

Tonight in Saint-German-En-Laye, Bonnet opened in 31.54 and brought it home in 36.22 to reap silver behind winner Tes Schouten. Schouten of the Netherlands produced a new national record of her own, posting a super quick 1:05.92 for gold.

Entering this competition, Bonnet’s swiftest 100m breast time rested at the 1:08.27 she logged in Marseille during this 2023 Giant Open Series. That means the versatile swimmer’s result this evening knocked nearly half a second off her best-ever from just a week ago.

This 100m breast represents Bonnet’s second individual long course meters French record. She also is the fastest French woman ever in the 100m freestyle, owning the national standard with her time of 52.74 from the 2018 French Championships.

Over short course, Bonnet owns the trifecta of breaststroke records. She set the marks at 29.98 in the 50m, 1:05.03 in the 100m and 2:21.34 in the 200m, the latter two of which were logged just last year.

It’s worth noting that this French record is still well behind the rest of the world in terms of the women’s 100m breaststroke. This new mark of 1:07.76 ranks just 22nd in the world for this season and would have placed just 18th at the 2022 World Championships.

Congratulations to Charlotte. She deserves it. She’s very versatile. Now, she owns french records in SCM (50, 100, 200 Breaststroke and 200 IM) and LCM (100 free, 52.74 and now 100 breast, 1.07:76). She got 200 m Free title in Glasgow 2018 at Euro Champs in LCM (1.54:95). But unfortunately, the french female breaststroke is very weak for a very long time. Swimmers are between 1.08 and 1.10 for 15 years. With such a time, she cannot hope anything at Worlds or Olympics. Not even the prelims cut.
