World champion Hwang Sunwoo was in the water on day two of the 2023 Korean Swimming Championships with the 19-year-old taking on the men’s 100m freestyle.

After posting a top-seeded effort of 48.98 yesterday in the heats, Hwang turned on the speed to get to the wall tonight in 48.21 for gold. Joining him in sub-49 second territory was Hojun Lee who snagged silver in 48.91.

For Hwang, the teen dipped under the World Aquatics ‘A’ cut of 48.51 needed for this summer’s World Championships. He owns a lifetime best of 47.56 in this event, a time he produced at the Olympic Games. There in Tokyo he ultimately placed 5th in a mark of 47.82.

Hwang already ranks #1 in the world on the season, courtesy of the 47.78 he put up last October at the Korean Sports Festival. His 48.21 result here checks in as the 3rd swiftest time of 2023.

The women’s 100m free saw Hur Yeonkyung fire off a new national record of 54.74 en route to gold. You can read more about the 17-year-old’s swim here.

Yesterday’s 1500m freestyle victor got it done again, as Kim Woomin topped the men’s 800m free podium. Kim captured a time of 7:52.62 to beat the field by over 12 seconds en route to securing a time good enough for this summer’s World Championships.

Also making the grade for Fukuoka was Eunji Lee. Contesting the women’s 100m back, Eunjie clocked a result of 1:00.47, coming within half a second of her own national record of 1:00.03 produced in May of 2021.

In addition to taking the meeting title, Eunji’s effort slid under the 1:00.59 needed for this summer’s World Championships.

Just missing the mark was Juho Lee, whose winning time of 54.06 in the men’s 100m back fell just shy of the 54.03 World Championships time standard.
