Dubuque Area Swimmin’ Hurricanes (DASH) 18-year-old Miriam Sheehan lowered her own Iowa Swimming LSC record in the 100-yard butterfly at last month’s IASI Short Course Championships.

Sheehan, an NC State commit and Tokyo 2021 Olympian from Puerto Rico, clocked a personal-best time of 51.67 to take down her previous LSC open record of 52.30 from last February. Before she held the record, Ruby Martin owned the previous mark with a 52.99 from 2017. Only two Wolfpack swimmers, Kylee Alons (50.44) and Abby Arens (50.60), went faster for NC State last season.

Sheehan also took out an 17-18 LSC standard in the 50 free, reaching the wall in 22.49 to sneak under Maddie Gehrke’s previous mark of 22.51 from 2014. She shaved .03 seconds off her previous best from last February. She added three more first-place finishes in the 100 free (48.95), 100 back (52.61), and 200 back (1:56.34) for a total of five individual titles.

Among the other highlights on the girls’ side was Central Iowa Aquatics 17-year-old Olivia Swalley, who also brought home five individual titles in the 100 breast (1:01.45), 200 breast (2:15.08), 200 fly (2:01.10), 200 IM (2:00.46), and 400 IM (4:13.75). The Iowa commit was slightly off her 17-18 LSC record in the 200 IM from November (1:58.59) while also coming just about a second shy of Gillian Davey’s 400 IM record from 2019 (4:12.05). Swalley added a personal-best 1:49.61 leading off Central Iowa Aquatics’ 800 free relay squad that won by nearly six seconds with a 7:26.88.

Central Iowa Aquatics placed second in the team standings 125.5 points behind Greater Des Moines YMCA.

Girls’ Team Scores

  1. Greater Des Moines YMCA – 942.5
  2. Central Iowa Aquatics – 817
  3. Iowa Flyers Swim Club – 480
  4. Piranhas Swim Club – 439.5
  5. Des Moines Swimming Federation – 368

On the boys’ side, Iowa Flyers Swim Club topped the standings with 946 points, headlined by a huge 15-16 LSC record in the 200 medley relay.

The quartet of 16-year-old Hayden Hakes (23.56), 15-year-old Winston Fan (26.25), 15-year-old Parker Macho (23.45), and 15-year-old Hudson Huberg (20.64) combined for a 1:33.90, shattering the previous LSC age-group standard by several seconds. Hakes posted a new lifetime best on his 50 back leadoff, taking a few tenths off his previous-best 23.85 from December.

Des Moines Swimming Federation 16-year-old Jacob Pins tallied four personal bests and three first-place finishes, but he couldn’t quite lower either of his LSC records in the 1000 or 1650 free. The Kentucky commit went 9:14.06 in the 1000 and 15:18.09 in the 1650 free, just off his best times of 9:08.33 and 15:05.72, respectively. His third victory came in the 500 free, where his winning time of 4:28.05 was a few seconds slower than his personal-best 4:25.34 from last month. A distance freestyle specialist, Pins lowered his lifetime bests in off-events such as the 50 free (22.79), 100 free (47.16), 200 fly (1:56.08), and 400 IM (4:03.05).

Greater Des Moines YMCA 18-year-old Lance Swanepoel triumphed in the 100 fly with a 47.57. The Wisconsin commit owns a lifetime best of 46.89 in the event from last month’s IHSAA Boys State Championships. Swanepoel’s teammate, 17-year-old Arizona State commit Asher Havenhill, won the 100 back with a personal-best 48.74, shaving about a tenth of a second off his previous best from last February. Havenill added a third-place finish in the 100 breast (56.97) and a fourth-place showing in the 100 fly (50.46).

Central Iowa 18-year-old Reed Wallace won the 200 back with a 1:46.47, dropping a few tenths off his previous-best 1:46.85 and coming just about a second shy of the 17-18 LSC record (1:45.43).

  2. Greater Des Moines YMCA – 745
  3. Piranhas Swim Club – 395.5
