COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – San Diego State’s Alex Roberts has been named the Mountain West Swimmer of the Year, as voted on by the league’s head coaches. Nevada’s Lucia Gabino was selected as the MW Diver of Year, while San Diego State’s Mike Shrader was named Swimming Coach of the Year and Nevada’s Jian Li You earned Diving Coach of the Year honors.
This marks the fourth-straight year that San Diego State has earned at least one postseason award and second-straight year for Nevada.
This marks the ninth MW Swimming Coach of the Year honor for Shrader and is the eighth for Li You as the MW Diving Coach of the Year. It is the second-consecutive accolade for both coaches, respectively.
SWIMMER OF THE YEAR
Alex Roberts, Jr., San Diego State
- Earned All-Mountain West honors in three individual events (100-butterfly, 100-backstroke, 200-backstroke) and two relay events (200-medley relay, 400-medley relay).
- Won the MW title in the 200-medley relay (1:36.62), 400-medley relay (3:35.20), 100-backstroke (52.55) and 200-backstroke (1:52.89).
- Set a San Diego State, MW championship meet and MW all-time record time of 1:52.89 in the 200-backstroke.
- NCAA qualifier in the 100-butterfly, 100-back and 200-back.
DIVER OF THE YEAR
Lucia Gabino, So., Nevada
- Named Diver of the Meet at the 2023 MW championship.
- Won the 1-meter (348.20) and 3-meter (375.25) dives at the MW Championship.
- Earned Mountain West Diver of the Week honors on Nov. 1.
SWIMMING COACH OF THE YEAR
Mike Shrader, San Diego State
- Led the Aztecs to their second-consecutive MW championship title and seventh overall, with a MW-record 1,638 points.
- Also won the award in 2009, ’10, ’11, ’13, ’14, ’19, ’20, ’22.
DIVING COACH OF THE YEAR
Jian Li You, Nevada
- The only Nevada diving coach to receive MW Diving Coach of the Year, winning eight times in total (’13, ’14, ’15, ’16, ’17, ’18, ’22, ’23).
