Seton Hall Hires Sapp from West Virginia U as New Assistant Coach

Seton Hall has named Derek Sapp as the new assistant coach for their men’s and women’s swimming programs. Sapp comes after two years as a graduate assistant at West Virginia and an assistant coach at Club Mountaineer.

He swam collegiately at Edinboro University in Pennsylvania, a Division II program.

In his last year with West Virginia, which was the Mountaineers’ first year in the new-look Big 12 Conference, he helped coach a team that included 7th-place 200 butterfly finisher at NCAA’s Mandie Nugent, and the Big 12’s Most Outstanding Swimmer of the conference championship meet Rachael Burnett.

He, diving coach PJ Hughes, and volunteer assistant Andrew LeBlanc will make up head Ron Farina’s coaching staff.

Sapp’s experience with Nugent and the 200 fly could pay huge dividends for the Pirates. Among their best returning swimmers is senior Jane Ehret, who had a very difficult junior year, but as a freshman was in the top 10 of the Big East, swimming a 2:02.

In the men’s 200 fly, they also have a pair of very good returning seniors: Greg Black and Tyler Naumann, who were both right around 1:56.0 in the 200 fly at Big Easts.

The Pirates are part of a wide-open “new” Big East Conference that is without 6 of the top 8 teams on the women’s side from last year’s championship meet, and the top 5 men’s teams. The Seton Hall men probably enter the new conference as early favorites, while the Seton Hall women will battle for the second spot behind expected champions Villanova.

West Virginia, Sapp’s previous stop, used to be a member of the Big East with Seton Hall.
