Dan Wiffen Looking Toward World Record in Fukuoka After Historic 1,500 in Stockholm

In the SwimSwam Podcast dive deeper into the sport you love with insider conversations about swimming. Hosted by Coleman HodgesGarrett McCaffrey, and Gold Medal Mel Stewart, SwimSwam welcomes both the biggest names in swimming that you already know, and rising stars that you need to get to know, as we break down the past, present, and future of aquatic sports.

We sat down with Dan Wiffen, the Irishman who became the #4 performer in history in the 1,500 freestyle this weekend in Stockholm. He discusses what he was expecting out of himself heading into the meet as well as how he has elevated his training over the past 6 months to reflect his performances. Wiffen is at the point where he’s calling out sets to challenge himself (he notes 6×500 on 5:30 best average).

Wiffen makes it clear that now, with only 4 more seconds to shave off, he’s gunning for Sun Yang’s legendary 14:31.02 world record. What does he need to do to drop under 14:31? In his words, “I just need to swim again.”

Wellbrock just went 14:34,89

From not even being sub 15 all that long ago to this is incredible. Absolutely no reason to not aim for the sun after his recent swim.

While Wellbrock and Romanchuk deserve mentions, the expected battle between Wiffen, Fink, and Paltrinieri really excites me

This did not age well. Wellbrock is now again faster than Wiffen, swam a PB in Berlin today.

I think the men’s distance frees may be the events I’m most excited for this summer, as well as the women’s 400. Good time for the distance crew

Coleman processing the six sub 5 min 500m on 5:30 is great.
There are some absolutely bonkers stories about sets distance legends have done, so this one didn’t surprise me like it did Coleman, but impressive nonetheless.

Is Hafanoui really a threat in the 1500? I know he is in the 400, but don’t think I’ve seen him do anything this amazing in the 1500.

I know it’s off topic but Milak just swam a 1:52:58 at hungarian nationals in the 200 fly.

So it’s confirmed Le Clos isn’t winning the 100 fly then if Milak is still in good form

And even if Milak gets beaten it’s going to be Liendo or maybe Casas. Also, why wouldn’t he be in good form?

Perhaps I’m missing a joke, but since when were we talking about Le Clos winning anything.

Milaks been the pretty clear #2 (#1 now) in the world in the 100 fly ever since Tokyo, we can discuss Liendo maybe challenging him but no chance Le Clos can go under 50.

I think Le Clos is the only one missing the joke.

Chad said the other day that he was confident about winning the 100fly in Paris. (Or something like that. I can’t remember the exact phrasing.) Mamy people found that quite amazing / weird given how he’s not in the top bunch of active 100 flyers.

Out in 54.00. Slow by his standard. He still has something in store.

He was out very slow, he basically backhalfed a 1:52 which is insane.

I can see he doing that on Prelims/Semis at World to just make everyone look age groupers

Apparently, he was focusing on freestyle for these nationals, which didn’t show in his 100 free, but also didn’t show in his 200 fly xd.

58.6 on the back half, or 29.3 per 50, which isn’t actually all that ridiculous when you look at splits from his 1:51s and 1:50s.

But yeah that 1:52.5 is business as usual is kinda insane

Yeah the crazy thing is, he takes it out slow by his standard and comes home also relatively slow by his standard and is still faster than anyone this season.

About Coleman Hodges

Coleman Hodges

Coleman started his journey in the water at age 1, and although he actually has no memory of that, something must have stuck. A Missouri native, he joined the Columbia Swim Club at age 9, where he is still remembered for his stylish dragon swim trunks. After giving up on …
