- Day 1 Recap
History was made tonight in China as Qin Haiyang became just the third man ever to delve into 57-second territory in the men’s 100m breaststroke.
Competing on day two of the 2023 Chinese Nationals, 23-year-old Qin ripped a time of 57.93 to get it done for gold. He beat out Yan Zibei who touched in a still-strong 58.79 for silver while Sun Jiajun rounded out the top 3 in another big performance of 58.99.
As for Qin, the Short Course World Championships medalist opened in 27.04 and closed in 30.89 to score a monster new personal best. Qin put up a time of 58.66 at the Chinese Spring Championships just last March.
Entering this competition, it was Yan who held the Chinese national and Asian continental record with the 58.63 he logged at the 2019 World Championships.
Qin’s result tonight hacked well over half a second off that to now join Great Britain’s Adam Peaty and the Netherlands’ Arno Kamminga as the only men to ever get under 58 seconds in the 100m breast event.
Adam Peaty‘s WR | Arno Kamminga‘s NR | Qin Haiyang‘s NR | |
50m | 26.63 | 27.14 | 27.04 |
100m | 30.25 | 30.66 | 30.89 |
56.88 | 57.80 | 57.93 |

As we reported yesterday, China’s medley relay was already looking to make some noise with Pan Zhanle hitting an Asian Record of 47.22 in the men’s 100m free. That paired with Xu Jiayu‘s backstroke looking more on form and now with Qin’s breaststroke smackdown, the relay is suddenly emerging as a gold medal-contending prospect.
Wu Peng went 23.7 in the 50 free prelims swimming butterfly. Looking good for the 100. Who else during the Phelps and Lochte era is still swimming?
Not too many! Sjostrom, Irie, and Campbell are the most prominent ones I can think of that were in Beijing.
Xu Jiayu 52.26 leading off medley relay.
li bingjie equaled her asian record in the 400
Exact same time that got her the bronze in Tokyo.
Other amazing times people may not have noticed:
Gao Weizhong (W, 14): 16:01.13 in 1500 FR, 10 seconds faster than USA NAG, less than a second off Xu Danlu’s all-time record
Yu Zidi (W, 10): 2:21.59 in 200 IM, 7 seconds faster than USA NAG
Gao qualified for the WCs and Asian Games and could break Xu Danlu’s record at either meet since she will still be 14.
Xu Danlu just disappeared after smashing all those records at a very young age
China MMR:
Xu Jiayu + Qin Haiyang + Zhang Yifei + Yang Junxuan
will be lethal.
Anyone know if Sun is doing any work for a crack at a 200m title in Paris?
what goggles is he wearing?
