101-Year-Old Maurine Kornfeld Competes in 7 Events at 2023 USMS Spring Nationals (Video)

2023 USMS SPRING NATIONALS

The 2023 US Masters Swimming Spring Nationals were held this past weekend at the storied William Woollett Jr. Aquatic Center in Irvine, CA. The meet, which features many of the top masters swimmers from around the country, also saw a whopping 57 records go down over the course of the four days.

Records aren’t the only thing to be celebrated at Masters Nationals, however. This year, we saw an exceptional feat accomplished by 101-year-old Maurine Kornfeld, who competed in seven races at the meet. Kornfeld did break a record in her races, taking down the women’s 100-104 50 free record with her time of 1:27.45. She actually broke the women’s 100-104 50 free record twice this past weekend, as she led-off a 200 free relay in 1:29.42 on the second day of the meet to initially break the record before she took another two second off it in the individual race on day three.  At 101 years old, Kornfeld was the oldest swimmer to compete at the meet this year.

Outside of the 50 free, Kornfeld also competed in the 100 free, 50 back, 100 back, and 200 back individually. She also raced on Rose Bowl Masters’ mixed 65+ 200 free relay, as well as their women’s 55+ 200 medley relay.

Here is a summary of Kornfeld’s seven swims this past weekend at Masters Nationals:

  • 50 back – 1:37.63
  • 100 back – 3:30.70
  • 200 back – 6:55.84
  • 50 free – 1:27.45
  • 100 free – 3:14.36
  • 50 free (200 free relay lead-off split) – 1:29.42
  • 50 back (200 medley relay split) – 1:40.74

US Masters Swimming posted a video of Kornfeld finishing her 100 back, which was her last event, on the final day of the meet. You can watch that video below:

That video wasn’t actually the first time Kornfeld has made a splash on Twitter for her Masters Nationals performance. We found this Tweet from American swimming legend Dara Torres back at the 2013 Masters Nationals, wherein she’s celebrating a then-91-year-old Kornfeld.

Her relay splits are a couple of seconds slower than her individual swims. As her coach, I’d chew her out for primarily focusing on her individual events, and not trying on the relays…

She was backstroke on the medley, so not there. But maybe on the Free?? Article doesn’t indicate which leg she swam…

It’s impressive to live until 102! It’s unbelievable to be swimming at that age as well!!
