2023 Mission Viejo Pro Swim Series – Day 2 Prelims Scratches: Ruck Pulls out of Day 2

2023 PRO SWIM SERIES – MISSION VIEJO

THURSDAY MORNING HEAT SHEET

Thursday morning’s prelims session at the 2023 Pro Swim Series in Mission Viejo is almost here. Before the session kicks off in a few hours, let’s take a look at the notable scratches for this morning’s events, which include the 100 free, 100 breast, 50 back, 200 fly, and 400 free.

First off, Stanford’s Taylor Ruck has pulled out of both her events for the day, and is likely not in attendance at the meet. The four-time Canadian Olympic medalist broke her hand skateboarding last month, and her return date is unknown.

She had entries in the 50, 100 and 200 free, and the 50 and 100 back in Mission Viejo.

Sandpipers of Nevada 17-year-old Bella Sims has pulled out of the women’s 100 free as well. Sims was entered 12th in the event but has decided not to swim it. Sims is still set to compete in the women’s 400 free today, where she comes in as the top seed. It seems as though Sims, who frequently races busy schedules at meets, may have scratched the 100 free in order to put all of her focus into the 400 today, so stay tuned for that. The scratch also came after Sims’ Sandpipers teammates Katie Grimes, Ilya Kharun, and Claire Weinstein pulled out of the meet a couple days ago.

The women’s 200 fly saw Stanford’s Charlotte Hook pull out of the race. Hook was the #2 seed coming into the meet, and with her scratch, Texas’ Kelly Pash is now the #2 seed this morning. Irvine Novaquatics 18-year-old Maggie Schalow was the 14th seed in the women’s 200 fly, but has also scratched out of the event.

A trio of Stanford swimmers scratched out of the women’s 400 free this morning. Sam Tadder (16th seed), Lillie Nordmann (17th seed), and Sophie Duncan (20th) have all pulled out of the race.

There were also three scratches in the top 20 seeds in the men’s 400 free this morning. Cal’s Matthew Chai, the sixth seed coming into the meet, has pulled out of the event. Cal pro swimmer Sean Grieshop, who came in as the 12th seed, has also scratched. Additionally, Magnolia Aquatic Club 17-year-old Gary Jones (15th seed) won’t be racing this morning either.

Chris O’Grady, the sixth seed in the men’s 100 breast, has scratched that race. Xavier Ruiz, a 16-year-old representing Puerto Rico, came in as the 11th seed in the event but has also pulled out of the race.

Yeah I think she’s a 100/200/400 swimmer as opposed to 200/400/800

It’s already been common knowledge for two days Ruck broke her hand skateboarding. She’s out of the meet most likely
