Greencastle, Ind. – Ben Hewitt, assistant men’s and women’s swimming coach at Nova Southeastern University for the last three seasons, has been named DePauw’s women’s swimming and diving head coach. Hewitt replaces Matt Ense who resigned to take a position at the University of Cincinnati.

“After conducting a national search, our process identified Ben as the right individual to direct the women’s swimming and diving program at DePauw,” Theodore M. Katula Director of Athletics Stevie Baker-Watson said.

“His coaching credentials, understanding of the liberal arts and Division III philosophy placed him at the top of our list. Ben had a positive, motivating interview with our student-athletes and I know they are excited about this upcoming season.”

While with Nova Southeastern, Hewitt coached and mentored student-athletes who won three conference championships, twice finished in the top 10 at the NCAA Division II Championships. Additionally, individuals earned three NCAA titles and 24 all-America honors with one student-athlete representing his country in the 2012 Summer Olympics.

Hewitt graduated from Wabash College in 2005 with a bachelor of arts degree in Spanish. A two-time captain for the Little Giants’ swimming and diving team, Hewitt was the squad’s most valuable swimmer in 2003 and earned the mental attitude award in 2002 and 2004.

Upon graduation, he returned to his alma mater as an assistant coach before moving on to Kenyon College where he served as assistant men’s and women’s coach. During that year the men won their 28th NCAA Division III title and the women collected their 21st.

In 2009 he rejoined the Wabash staff as an assistant and coached two NCAA qualifiers in addition to seven “B” cut performances and four school-record holders.

“We welcome Ben to DePauw and know that he is determined to bring success to this program,” Baker-Watson added. “We couldn’t be happier that he was able to lead the team’s first official practice on Monday.”

The 2012-13 Tigers finished in a tie for 27th at the NCAA Division III Championships and this year’s team opens the season on October 26 at the Indiana Intercollegiates in West Lafayette.
