Caeleb Dressel, who has been the top name in and out of the pool for USA Swimming for half-a-decade, is entered at the US International Team Trials that begin next week in Indianapolis.
Precious-little information has been available about Dressel’s present, or future, since he left last summer’s World Championships midway through the meet without explanation.
Dressel is entered in the 50 free, 100 free, 50 fly, and 100 fly, which is his typical schedule when he’s at his best. Given Dressel’s, and Florida’s, history, there’s no guarantee that he’ll swim all of those races, but at a minimum there are none of the less-likely entries that we’ve seen from him in the past.
Dressel resumed training sometime around Christmas, and has raced at just two meets since Worlds. At the Speedo Atlanta Classic in mid-May, he swam the 50 free, 100 free, 100 fly, and 200 fly prelims (the latter an unusual entry for him).
Times:
- 50 free – 22.57
- 100 free – 50.29
- 100 fly – 52.41
- 200 fly – 2:05.18
A few weeks later, Dressel swam 49.80 in the 100 free at a local FAST Senior Open meet in Ocala, Florida.
Dressel’s resume in the pool is long. All 7 of his Olympic medals are gold, and he was the star of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, winning 5 of those medals. He is also a 14-time World Champion in long course and 6-time World Champion in short course.
CB is the Aaron Rodgers of swimming.
Who is CB?
100 free
45 incoming
Jk actually probably 47 mid
He was a 47 high last year. I don’t think he’s going to be terrible like some are predicting but I don’t think he’ll be better than last year.
This may be a stupid question, but let’s say Dressel qualifies 4th in the 100, securing his spot on the relay, then leads off the 4×1 at worlds and hypothetically becomes the fastest American this year. Since he wasn’t top 2 at trials, is it up to the coaches whether he can swim the 100 individually? Or is it up to FINA?
it’s based on finishes at nationals. entries are pretty set in stone after a trials meet in the US, not a lot of wiggle room unless someone drops an event
At some point they have to finalize entries and that is it. You can’t substitute entries at the meet for individual events
Absolutely no changes to individual events can happen at the meet. Eg Shayna Jack got injured last year but wasn’t allowed to be replaced in her individual events despite multiple others having the qual times.
TOTALLY REAL PREDICTIONS:
100 Free – 47.01 (21.96/25.05)
50 Fly – 21.69
100 Fly – 49.44 (22.23/27.21)
50 Free – 19.99
Weirdly slow 100 fly
Good luck Caeleb! Welcome back. Think he makes the team in the 50 Free and 100 Fly and gets a relay spot in the 100 Free. Hopefully he does a long interview at some point soon, would go a long way in rebuilding bridges.
He’ll be alright by next summer and be a contender for the 50 free and 100 fly, this summer will determine if he’s the favorite.
What bridges does he need to rebuild? What does he owe to anyone?
bridges with the swimswam commenters he personally offended, obviously
Bailing on your teammates in the middle of a major international meet without offering a reason is highly offensive. It’s incredibly selfish and insensitive. It pissed off a lot of people.
I mean, he didn’t give YOU a reason, but he doesn’t owe you one. Who says he didn’t give his teammates a reason?
Assuming he wins the 100 fly, I presume he could still swim the 50 fly at World Champs based on previous years’ selection methodology? Or does he need to have the 50 fly WC qualification time?
Has he swum the 50 fly A cut within the qualification period? If not, he has to to be entered. If he has and he wins the 100 fly, then he will also be selected for the 50.
He won the 50 fly at worlds last year which was inside the qualification period.
So let’s say ye wins the 100 fly but gets 3rd in the 50 fly, does that mean 3 Americans will swim the 50 fly?
no. top 2 don’t automatically make it in the stroke 50s, just the winner
No, each country has a max of two entries per event.
For stroke 50s only the winner gets selected. The second spot is offered to the 100 winner.
I predict he makes the team in the 50s and a relay spot on the 100free.
Caeleb “no show” Dressel
Just say you’re deeply in love with him and move on bro
Well, i got your point and understand it. But nevertheless i am glad he‘s back.
He sure showed up to multiple Olympic medals in Tokyo.
Ever had or observed someone in a mental health crisis (gently referred to as ‘issues’)? They happen when they happen, & are not able to be scheduled. Yeah, it sucked for him that his occurred during ’22 Worlds, but I’m assuming that everyone who NEEDED TO KNOW, ie his teammates, coaches, family & doctors, all knew the basics of the situation. Not included, noticeably, is the rest of the swimming world, both swimmers & fandom, which means all of us. Yeah, want to know what happened, cuz I’m curious/nosy, but at the end of the day it’s none of my — or any of us, actually — business. Anxiety/acute depressive disorder/OCD come to mind; just be well, Mr Dressel, &… Read more »
Sadly, being able to manage pressure and dealing with mental health issues successfully is part of being a champion.
Yes, it is; the pressure & scrutiny is INTENSE, & while I’m sure we can imagine it, unless we’ve been there, we truly have no idea. Michael Phelps was suicidal after that 2nd DUI, & didn’t want to live. The media builds up extraordinary expectations of our elite athletes, then hammer them when they falter or aren’t perfect. Simone Biles, Tokyo 2021. If she had tried to compete in the finals, she could have been seriously, perhaps fatally injured. Did she let her teammates down by withdrawing? I bet she’s just as proud of that event final bronze in the beam as she is of all the world titles. Elite athletes are human beings, not human doings. Caeleb will be… Read more »
I don’t really care what Dressel says or doesn’t, but his situation is different to Biles because of how it was handled. She was completely open and transparent and used it to educate people. If she had done what Dressel did and just gone silent for a year she would literally be fearing for her life.
Sad but true. & what does that say about all of us as fans?
