Carson Foster on the Support He’s Received from Chase Kalisz: “I want to be like Chase”

2023 U.S. NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

After his win in the 400 IM, Carson Foster about the mentorship he has received from fellow US 400 IM-er Chase Kalisz since the 2021 Olympic Trials. Even though Kalisz bested Foster in Omaha, with Foster missing the Olympic team completely, Kalisz made a concerted effort to encourage Foster to keep his head up and stay the course of his swimming. Ever since, Kalisz has adopted a mentor role with Foster, encouraging him that he can take the reigns as the “next man up” for the USA in the 400 IM.

Foster is a great leader of USA swimming and he leads by example he struggled with himself at the beginning but through the past 2 years he has built his confidence up to a point where he looked like he was having fun at nattys and not thinking too much about his swims. He was just happy for everyone else who made the team. He put himself second. Excited to have him repping team USA.

We have been blessed in OHIO to have some of the BEST male and female swimmers not only in the US but Internationaly over the decades. Rhodenbaughs (my era in the 80s!), Margo Geer, Grant House, Hannah Bach, Adam Chaney, Scotty Buff. BUT, The FOSTER siblings may NEVER be replicated in OHIO Swimming history! Nonetheless, the Fosters are CLASS! Both Carson and Jake still hold OHSAA DI swimming State Records. Jake 200IM, 100BR. Carson 200FR (former National HS Record) 100BK What CARSON has done and continues to do is so respectable! JAKE, who will be Dr. Jake Foster one day, continuing to swim is also quite admirable! James and Mrs Foster taught their children humility! What I found so intruiging… Read more »

And like Chase, Carson is so much better in LCM than SCY. Chase was probably valuable in reminding him of this and shaking off Carson’s NCAA performance.

Chase was solid both in SCY and LCM. Just a TRUE TALENT! To BRAG about our OHIO STUDS! Carson and Hunter ARMSTRONG! Both now PRO! BOTH much better in LCM than SCY, although I will say Carson, up to this year really improved in his events! Heck, how many guys in NCAAs have broken 1:40 in the 2IM. Excited for BOTH these born and raised BUCKEYES at WORLDS and in PARIS 2024!

Chase has also greatly helped Leon Marchand as they trane together at ASU. Remember the scene of the two of them Leon and Chase hugging after the IMs at Budapest last year. Chase is a real class act and willing to help many younger developing swimmers.

CHASE is not only one of the GREATEST American Male swimmers in HISTORY, he is a true embassador! I think when CHASE finally decides to hang up the goggles, he will be a fantastic coach! Probably and eventually at his alma mater Georgia! This kid is one of the best!!!!!

Hats off to Jake Foster too. 3rd in US 2Breast is nothing to sneeze at. And all the while getting good enough grades to apply for Med school. Geez, I want to dislike the family, but it’s difficult.

Many swimming families have to deal with competition btw siblings. It can be hard to navigate. It seems like the Foster brothers handle it well.

Agree, considering they both swim the IMs.

Jake struggles with the backstroke otherwise he’d be closer to Carson’s times. Jake has produced some great breast splits in the 400 IM.

2 great US Swimming ambassadors: Foster and Kalisz!
Both are so professional and represent USA and competitive swimming extremely well.

Coleman Hodges

Coleman started his journey in the water at age 1, and although he actually has no memory of that, something must have stuck. A Missouri native, he joined the Columbia Swim Club at age 9, where he is still remembered for his stylish dragon swim trunks. After giving up on …
