Mizzou Tigers Claim Both Titles at Show-Me Showdown

The Mizzou Swimming and Diving Teams opened their season at the Ninth Annual Show-Me Showdown Friday afternoon at the Mizzou Aquatic Center in Columbia, Mo.

MENS MEET

The Tigers claimed first place with 673 points.  Missouri State placed second with 545 points, followed by Lindenwood in third (355), Drury in fourth (338), Missouri S&T fifth (214), Washington University sixth (164), William Jewell seventh (59) and Truman State eighth (44).

For the Tigers, Sophomore Max Grodecki took home two first-place finishes with wins in the 50 and 100 Free. Grodecki clocked a 20.64 in the 50 Free, ahead of senior Mark Conroy, who placed second in 21.25. Grodecki swam a 45.38 in the 100 Free to claim top honors. Mizzou’s 200 Medley Relay A team of senior Logan Mosley, juniors Sam Tierney and Igor Kozlovskij and Grodecki took first-place in the opening event with a time of 1:29.90. The Tigers also took top honors in the 200 Free Relay, as Mizzou’s A team of Tierney, Conroy, Grodecki and Mosley touched first with a 1:22.74. Tierney claimed an event win of his own with a victory in the 100 Breast. The sophomore recorded a time of 55.66 for the win.

Missouri State took the top two spots in the 200 IM with junior Paul Le and sophomore Uvis Kalnins finishing 1-2 respectively with times of 1:49.26 and 1:50.18. Le also captured a victory in the 100 Back with a winning time of 48.50. Colin Hill also finished top-8 in that event with a 1:56.41.  Kalnins also had a 2^nd place finish with a 45.48 in the 100 Free.  Miguel Davila finished with a 4^th place in the 500 free with a 4:37.08.  Missouri State also finished in 2^nd place in both 200 Relays to the Tigers, but the team of Kalinins, Le, Vitalii Baryshok, and Caleb Schuermann took top honors in the 400 Free Relay with a time of 3:01.81.

For Lindenwood, Gustavo Silva Santa started with a win in the 200 Free. He posted a time of 1:39:96 to earn the victory. Silva Santa also saw another victory in the 500 Free with a total time of 4:33:39.

For the Drury Panthers, Samuel Olson claimed top honors in the 100 Fly with a time of 49.63.  The DU men claimed third in the 200 Free Relay with a 1:24.87, and were fourth in the 200 Medley Relay with a 1:33.47. Kacper Pelczynski claimed a second place finish in the 100 Breast with a 55.77 with Banjo Bora coming in seventh. Stainslav Kuzmin came in sixth in the 100 Fly (50.45). The Panthers had three seventh place finishes on the night with those coming from Nick McCarthy in the 50 Free, Jordi Montseny in the 100 Back and Borja in the 100 Breast.

For Missouri S&T, Aljaz Kerc had a pair of finishes among the top five in his individual events, placing fourth in the 50 Free with a time of 21.52 and later finishing fifth in the 100 Free with a time of 47.69. Ethan Goldfarb finished sixth overall in the 200 IM with a time of 1:54.19.  Goldfarb also took eighth in the 100 Breast with a 58.11.

For Washington University, Freshman Justin Morrell had the highest finish of the day for the Bears as he swam to third place in the men’s 50 freestyle with a time of 21.44. Sophomore Kaisen Yao finished 10th in the event in 21.81. Freshman Michael Lagieski had the only other top-10 individual finish for the WUSTL men, placing 10th in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 58.57. Morrell led off with 200-free relay and teamed with sophomore Reed Dalton, Yao and junior Matt Nutter to place ninth with a time of 1:27.02. In the 200-medley relay, Yao, senior Brian Carpenter, Dalton and Morrell teamed up for a ninth-place finish in a time of 1:34.74.

WOMENS MEET

On the Women’s Side Missouri scored 629.50 points to earn its ninth-consecutive Show-Me Showdown victory. Missouri State placed second with 535.50, followed by Drury in third (339.50), Lindenwood fourth (313.50), Washington University fifth (234.0), Truman State sixth (232.0), William Jewell seventh (125.0) and Maryville eighth (12.0).

For the Tigers, Junior Danielle Barbiea and sophomores Anna Patterson and Lauren Reedy each claimed two wins on the day to lead the Tigers. Barbiea took home first-place in both the 50 Free and 100 Fly. She clocked a time of 23.27 in the 50 Free and touched in 55.03 in the 100 Fly. Patterson swept the 100 and 200 Free in times of 49.25 and 1:46.10, respectively. Freshman Brittany Hammond placed second in the 200 Free in a time of 1:49.00. Mizzou also took top honors in all three relays during the day.

For the Missouri State, Ibby Simcox and Roni Balzam finished 2-3 in the 100 Fly with times of 58.16 and 58.85 respectively.  Anna Ahlin finished second in the 100 Free with a 53.55. Ahlin also had a third-place finish in the 100 Back with a 57.16. Shannon Myer joined her in that event to pick up a fifth-place finish in 53.87. Dora Kiss took top honors in the 500 Free, her time of 5:02.32 just out-touched Mizzou’s Hammond who finished in a 5:02.54.  Renata Sander finished with a 1:04.42 to take second in the 100 Breast.

The Drury Women were led by freshman Yekaterina Rudenko’s victory in the 100 Back with a 56.73 and second place finish in the 50 Free with a 24.44. The Drury women claimed a third in the 200 Medley Relay with a 1:46.25 and freshman Kay Gieseke was third in the 50 Free with a 24.74. Leah Reed took fourth in the 200 Free with a 1:56.19, Tinsley Andrews took fourth in the 100 Free with a 51.92, and a they had a pair of fifth place finishes by Sarah Pullen in the 200 Free with a1:56.54 and Gretchen Stein in the 200 IM with a 2:10.46.

The Lindenwood women started the event of with a fifth place finish in the 200 Medley Relay. The relay team consisted of Jocelyn Woo, Storrie Cramer, Maike Tweesmann, and Niki Dahl.

The Washington University women had a number of top-10 finishes. Sophomore Amanda Stadermann swam a time of 58.96 to place fourth in the 100 butterfly. Stadermann also led off the Bears’ fourth-place finishing 400 Free relay in a time of 3:38.73 that also included sophomore Grace Counts, freshman Connie Gan and sophomore Kristalyn McAfee. The team of freshman Erin Polries, junior Sara Taege, freshman MariMac Collins and sophomore Katie Anderson placed ninth in the event with a time of 3:45.49. In the 200 Medley Relay, senior Chi Pham, sophomore Sophie Gan, Stadermann and freshman Claire Savage placed ninth in a time of 1:52.85.
