Wisconsin Picks Up Middle-Distance Star Hannah James Out of FL

Hannah James from Punta Gorda, Florida has verbally committed to the University of Wisconsin, according to the local Charlotte Sun newspaper.

James is primarily a middle distance freestyler and 200 butterflier, who took 3rd at the Florida 1A State Championship meet in 2012 in both the 200 and 500 yard freestyles. With the two swimmers in front of her in both of those races now swimming in college, James is the favorite to win both of those races.

In yards, her bests in the 200 yard free is 1:48.57, and her best in the 500 yard free is 4:47.02. She’s also been 56.12 and 1:59.37 in the 100 and 200 yard butterflies.

In the first two years under Whitney Hite, the Wisconsin women have had a lot of success, but it’s been largely in the shorter events. Now, however, he and his staff are starting to parlay that into filling out a much wider range of events. James’ best times in the 500 free and the 200 fly are both faster than any Wisconsin women went last season.

James swims for Charlotte County Swimming and Charlotte High School.
