Although we’re only through day one of six of the 2023 Asian Games, the nation of China has staked its claim on the swimming competition.

All told through just one finals session, China reaped all 7 available gold medals and secured 4 silvers to bring its total to 11 on the day. Japan sits as a far 2nd place with 3 silver and 3 bronze while Hong Kong grabbed 2 bronze medals on the night.

Topping a podium is an achievement in itself; however, China put an exclamation point on nearly all performances, with national and continental records going down as a result.

China’s 3 Big Performances

I remember when many swimswammers were incredulous and didn’t believe that China is prioritizing Asian Games over World Championship.

Yeah, Asians and Australians are aware the importance of Asian Games to Asian countries.

Uninformed Americans probably think Asian Games is just like Pan Am lol.

Probably closer to Commonwealth. Only if your country is hosting Pan Ams is there much of a priority in the big picture!

Yes, the Asian Games have more sports, more events and more athletes than the Olympics….making it I presume the biggest multi-sport event in the World.

Pan Ams are quite important to just about every country competing outside of the US and Canada.

Men’s 50 Back: China heavily favored
Women’s 50 Back: China heavily favored
Men’s 50 Free: Anyone can win this one, Singapore/Hong Kong/Japan/China all have a chance with their swimmers
Women’s 200 Free: Hong Kong heavily favored
Men’s 100 Breast: China heavily favored
Women’s 200 IM: China decently favored (I doubt Ohashi will win but she is the Olympic Champ)
Men’s 4×200: Looked like South Korea was favored here pre-meet but China is looking good now

4 x 200m should be a cracking race. Maybe some more records

I want to see Pan and Hwang going head to head on the last leg and pushing each other to their limits

How about 144s on the opening leg ?

Feel like that’s less exciting but also an option

I still feel like Korea is favored for the 4×200 relay. Zhanle is obviously in good form, and Haoyu will probably be pretty good, but their other 2 legs are weak. Korea has more depth,

China didn’t show all their cards at Worlds. Wang Shun is their #2 200 Freestyler and will likely be subbing in for whatever 1:46 leg out there (and he is obviously in very good form as well). South Korea has three very strong legs that can split 1:44s but they have an extremely weak leg that is only around 1:47-48 level, so this will be close.
