White Team Tops Red At Youngstown State Intrasquad

The white team defeated the red team 347-314 in the annual Red vs. White Intrasquad Meet hosted by the Youngstown State swimming and diving programs at Beeghly Natatorium on Saturday.

After a close meet between the two squads, the white team earned the win in the final event, the mixed 400 freestyle relay, to seal the intrasquad victory over the red team. The relay team of Gavin ReddenChristian TaylorAmanda Denny, and Miriam Frass touched first with a time of 3:24.28, finishing just a half second ahead of the red team with a time of 3:24.78.

Leading the white team for the women was Frass, who picked up three individual event victories in the squad’s win. She picked up her first victory of the day in the 1000 free with a time of 10:48.88 before clocking a 4:35.97 in the 400 IM for the win. In her final individual event, she clocked a 5:29.31 to win the 500 free.

On the men’s side, Aleksa Radenovic led the white team with three individual victories of his own. First, he clocked a 1:55.00 in the 200 fly for the win and followed that up with a victory in the 100 fly (50.40) and 200 IM (1:56.80).

Also earning multiple event victories for the white team was Soma Albert who swept the backstroke events. He clocked a 51.96 in the 100 back and a 1:57.37 in the 200 back. Allison Ramirez Romero also earned two event victories with wins in the 100 and 200 fly with times of 1:00.24 and 2:14.25, respectively.

Six other members of the white team earned individual event victories: Gavin Webb (1000 free, 9:55.14), Darren Laing (200 free, 1:47.94), Gavin Redden (100 free, 46.59), Christian Taylor (500 free, 4:55.77), Macy Wang (200 IM, 2:17.78) and Zachary Lao [Platform Dive (Two), 76.80].

On the red side, Oliwia Kaniak led the Penguins with three individual event victories. She won both the 100 and 200 breast with times of 1:07.67 and 2:27.62, respectively. She also touched first in the 100 IM with a time of 1:01.75.

Hanna Held was a key scorer for the red team after sweeping all three women’s diving events: one-meter (131.12, three dives), three meter (133.75, three dives), and platform (77.65, two dives). In addition, Simon Iwanonkiw earned victories in both the one-meter (94.85, three dives) and three-meter (128.70, three dives) on the men’s side.

Also earning multiple event victories for the red squad were Anna KozinskaJames Slessor, and Madelyn Mahoney. Kozinska swept the women’s backstroke events with times of 1:01.11 in the 100 back and 2:14.07 in the 200 back. Slessor swept the men’s breaststroke events, clocking a 57.33 in the 100 breast and a 2:08.79 in the 200 breast. Mahoney earned victories in the 50 and 100 free with times of 25.03 and 54.60, respectively.

Four other Penguins earned individual event victories for the red team: Hailey Clark (200 free, 2:05.51), Rares Druga (50 free, 20.88), Terin Frodyma (100 IM, 54.44), and Dominic Bono (400 IM, 4:14.26).

The Penguins will open the 2023-24 season at St. Bonaventure on Saturday, Oct. 7.
