SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The San Diego State swim and dive program opened its weekend stay on the Central Coast with a 159-127 triumph over Cal Poly in a non-conference dual meet Friday at Anderson Aquatic Center.
The Aztecs captured 10 of 16 event titles against the Mustangs and posted the fastest time in three additional races to secure its 52nd consecutive dual victory dating back to Jan. 8, 2018.
SDSU set the tone for the day by claiming the top two spots in the 200 medley relay, with the quartet of Alex Roberts, Moa Bergdahl, Riley Tapley and Avery Turney joining forces for a winning effort of 1:44.56, while the team of Trine Forss, Christiana Williams, Reka Nyiradi and Rachel Hubka clocked in at 1:46.74 to finish second.
Two Aztecs placed second and third, respectively, in the 1000 freestyle, as Summer West touched the wall at 10:34.00, followed by Paige Mitchell, who recorded a swim of 10:41.68.
The Scarlet and Black quickly won the next seven events, sparked by Nyiradi’s victory in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:50.52, while Turney touched the wall in second at 1:55.56, followed by Alyssa Schiller’s third-place swim of 1:57.39.
Shortly thereafter, Tapley emerged triumphant in the 100 backstroke with a winning effort of 56.13, while Roberts (57.79) and Forss (58.02) placed second and third, respectively.
SDSU also boasted the top three performers in the 100 breaststroke, as Williams (1:03.23) edged Bergdahl (1:03.75) for the crown, while Meredith Smithbaker (1:05.64) took third.
The Aztecs promptly duplicated the feat in the 200 butterfly, as Mai McKenna touched the wall with a winning time of 2:06.03, while Wilma Johansson completed the race in second at 2:07.06, followed by Charlotte Sevin (2:09.68).
The 50 freestyle witnessed a tight race, where Hubka (24.04) edged Stehr (24.45) for the event title.
Additionally, San Diego State flashed its dominance in the first of two diving competition on the day, as Valentina Lopez Arevalo logged an NCAA Zone qualifying score of 283.58 points on the 1-meter springboard, while Summer Westmoreland racked up 262.65 points to finish second, followed by Olivia Zamudio (231.00 pts).
The event also featured the collegiate debuts of Jessica Schroeder (229.58 pts) and Alina Skrocki (216.23 pts), who posted the fourth and fifth-best scores of the afternoon but whose totals were deemed exhibitions.
The meet continued with the 100 freestyle, where Smithbaker (52.08) bested Turney (52.76) in another close race, while Tapley recorded the fastest time in the 200 backstroke, with her clocking of 2:03.83 counted as an exhibition.
Similarly, Williams (2:16.93) and Bergdahl (2:20.01) were the top two competitors in the 200 breaststroke, with their times considered exhibitions as well.
On the 3-meter springboard, Lopez Arevalo claimed her second title of the day with another NCAA Zone qualifying mark of 303.45 points, while Skrocki (276.23 pts) took second, followed by Westmoreland (263.93 pts).
In the 200 individual medley, Stehr finished with a winning time of 2:10.96, while Summer West was second after completing the race at 2:12.13.
In the final event of the day, the Aztecs’ top two 200 free relay teams posted the fastest times in the competition but were counted as exhibitions. The quartet of Smithbaker, Forss, Turney and Hubka clocked in at 1:36.32, while the team of Schiller, Emily Allen, Roberts and Johansson finished at 1:39.17.
San Diego State remains in San Luis Obispo on Saturday to battle Cal Poly and Fresno Pacific in a double dual meet, starting at 10:30 a.m. PT. The three teams will compete in relay races only at Anderson Aquatic Center.

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly women’s swimming and diving team claimed six victories in Friday’s dual against San Diego State at the Anderson Aquatic Center, including a pair from freshman Olivia Sundgren.
The Mustangs held their own against the Aztecs, the two-time defending Mountain West champions. SDSU won the dual 159-127.
Sundgren, a Clovis, Calif. native, led the way, securing individual victories in the two longest swimming events contested during the dual — the 500-yard freestyle (5:04.63) and 1000-yard freestyle (10:19.18).
Senior Kelly McDermott, an All-MPSF Second Team selection in the 400 individual medley last season, grabbed first in the 200 backstroke (2:08.37), while sophomore Abby Isaly and junior Sarah Jacobson took second and third in the event.
Freshmen swept the top three places for the Mustangs in the 200 breaststroke as Rhian Neitzel secured first (2:23.93), Amalie Claus-Udarbe second and Dohna Karabelov third.
Junior Summer Cheng, this year’s ‘Queen of the Pool’ for the Mustangs, cruised to a first-place finish in the 100 butterfly (57.61 seconds). Sophomore Jen Reiter and freshman Lilli Chau captured second and third respectively in the event.
The Mustangs won the only relay swam during Friday’s dual, earning first in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:39.65. Freshmen Ella Bettencourt and Claus-Udarbe, sophomore Melia Costa and senior Katie Faris swam legs on the relay.
Senior Alexa Porter and junior Madreena Lee took second and third respectively in the 500 free. Freshman Brielle Vail (50 free) and Bettencourt (100 free) each grabbed third-place individual finishes, while Sundgren also earned third in the 200 individual medley.
Freshman Shayna Gayer was the top finisher for Cal Poly in both diving events, capturing fourth in the 3-meter and sixth in the 1-meter.
The Mustangs return to the pool on Saturday at 10 a.m. for another meet at the Anderson Aquatic Center. The Cal Poly men’s team will join the action as the two squads battle San Diego State and Fresno Pacific in a meet consisting of relays only.
