Luke Hobson had a solid outing at the Orange and White meet, winning the 500 free in 4:20.33 while placing 2nd in the 200 free in 1:35.66. Hobson said this past month had been one of the hardest training cycles he’d ever been through. The world champs medalist is looking forward to resting for big meets this spring, from NCAAs to the Olympic Trials.

Didn’t he go 1:29 flat start last year? He will probably lead off again this year so we won’t get a split from him in the 800 FRR. Getting a lead in the 800 FRR makes it much harder on all the other teams to not overswim the first 50-100 to catch up.
Yeah you lead with Luke, probably follow with Coby and give the two newbies as big as lead as you can (or keep it as close as you can)
First time in a while Texas isn’t the clear favorite in that relay
ASU could lead off with Leon and that could keep it close with Texas all the way through
Hobson lead off 1:29.6
Coby split 1:30.5
Freshman Germonprez I thought was 1:33 already. He may be able to split 1:31.
Just need one more solid leg and Texas seems to always find a few.
That could be a tough relay to beat.
Among the returning group Huckaby and Ndebele are both 1:34 and rapidly developing. Wouldn’t be surprised if both breakthrough and make a push.
Didn’t they lose House’s 1:30? Who takes his spot?
Every top 800 free relay lost a big piece (or a couple of big pieces), so it’s as much an attrition thing as anything else.
Jonny Kulow is next man up, he was 1:33.67 at Pac-12s last year, but of course we all know about his big breakout summer in long course so I don’t think a 1:32 low/1:31 high is an unreasonable projection, especially on a flying start. Senc-Samardzic has been 1:49 in LCM, so he might be the other option. I bet Sarkany has a good 200 in him too.
If Sarkany is their distance guy, I thought he had a choppy stroke which wouldn’t bode well for a 200. I could be wrong though.
ASU returns Marchand, Sammon, and Hill? Add in a 1:32 or better from Kulow or someone else they’ll have a good shot too.
Cal has Lasco and Jett and probably Shackell. Hawk was 1:33.0 last year so he should be 1:32 mid at worst.
I could see any of these 3 winning depending on who’s at their best at NCAAs, who over swims the first 50, and which teams freshman swims best.
Surely Kharun can drop a fast 200 too. He seems to have all the tools to be a talent SCY 200 free.
Yeah I thought about that, but 1) his 200 free hasn’t been as good as his other events to date, and 2) he must be more useful to them in the other four relays.
I thought he split 41.9 at their first meet in the 4FRR. With his middle distance IM and Fly and distance free capabilities, you’d think he could split 1:31-1:32 no problem.
He’ll be on fly MDRs and probably the 4FRR.
200 FRR – Dolan, Kulow, Sammon (19.3), Peel (19.2), and Freshman Schuster has been 19.6 in HS.
They’ll probably be ok with keeping him off their 2FRR if he’s needed on their 8FRR.
Good point about the 200 free relay. Then you’re right – might be him.
he split a 41 in the 100 free at his first dual meet. i have to believe his 200 will be very strong by end of season based on his 200 fly and mile time in the past.
I gave the qualifier for that reason 🙂
