INDIANAPOLIS – The IUPUI men’s and women’s swim and dive teams defeated the Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles in the Jaguars’ home opener on Saturday. The women’s team silenced the Eagles by a score of 149 to 93 while the men defeated USI, 193 to 44.
Graduate student Lauren Thompson made her return to the pool after battling injury to lead the women’s “A” team relay to a first place finish in the 400 medley relay. The winning relay team made up of Thompson, Kaylee Dexter, Lillian Brandt and Kate Larsen finished in a time of 4:00.56. The men’s team also collected the first place finish in the 400 medley relay. The team of Grayson Tidwell, Logan Kelly, Spencer Jyawook and Kevin Burke finished in a time of 3:20.37 to earn the victory.
Next, freshman Youssef Magdy earned a first-place finish in the 1000 free with a shining time of 9:30.31. Michael Esdon finished right behind him at 9:55.89. On the women’s side, Samantha Lee and Lylah Huston finished back-to-back for second and third place finishes.
Hanna Barton took second in the 200 free with a time of 1:59.92 while the Jags dominated in the men’s 200 free, taking the top three spots. Ben Kimmel took first (1:42.69), Jack Gallob earned second (1:43.78) and Logan Kelly was right behind them in third (1:45.56).
The Jags took the top two spot in the women’s 50 free with Emmaleigh Zietlow stealing the top spot with a time of 24.57. Freshman Kate Larsen finished behind Zietlow in second (25.00). On the men’s side, David Niemiec finished in first with a time of 21.78.
IUPUI swept the men’s 400 IM with freshman Turner Long taking first with a time of 4:08.32. Luke Dibley earned second (4:10.38), Isaac Wilson placed third (4:13.87) and Spencer Koehrn finished fourth (4:19.69). On the women’s side, Zoe Hendrickx earned second with a time of 4:48.59.
In the 100 fly, Priscilla Zavala earned first with a time of 58.83, while the men’s team swept the top four spots. Keiran Rahmaan finished first (50.57), Danial Sanahurskij took second (52.73), Nick Cavanah earned third (52.82) and Jack Gallon took fourth (52.86).
Zietlow collected her second first-place finish of the meet in the 100 free with a time of 53.14 while Madelyn Weber took second at 55.11. Freshman Luca Eckert took first on the men’s side with a time of 47.01.
Thompson continued her outstanding return to the pool with a first-place finish in the 100 back with a time of 1:00.33. On the men’s side Jyawook earned first (50.04), Burke finished second (50.89) and Kimmel took third (52.11).
Magdy then collected his second win of the meet, this time in the 500 free with a time of 4:36.98. Emily Hoekstra was the top women’s finisher in the 500 free for the Jags with a second-place finish with a time of 5:19.15.
Victoria Surdyka finished second in the women’s 100 breast with a time of 1:07.81 while the men’s team took the top four spots. Dakota Kinder led the way finishing in first with a time of 58.63.
IUPUI closed out the swimming portion of the meet with the 200 free relay. The women’s relay team made up of Brandt, Larsen, Tori Barnet and Barton took first with a time of 1:39.76. The men’s relay team with Burke, Jyawook, Kelly and Dibley earned first with a time of 1:24.44.
The Jags collected points on the boards as well. Senior Sadie Smith led the way for the women’s team with wins in both the 1-meter and the 3-meter. She earned the 3-meter win with a score of 241.05 and took first in the 1-meter with a total score of 262.58.
The 2022-23 Horizon League Freshman of the Year, Sebastian Otero continued his dominance on the boards, sweeping the men’s events. Otero finished first in the 3-meter with an IUPUI record score of 401.70 and took first in the 1-meter totaling an IUPUI-high 395.48 points.
With the win over USI, the men’s team is now 4-0 on the season and the women’s team is 2-3. Both teams will be back in the pool on Friday, October 13 at the IU Natatorium when they host Valparaiso at 4:00 PM.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana Women’s Swimming and Diving came up short to IUPUI on Saturday, 149 to 93 points, in the Screaming Eagles second meet in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Freshman Caiya Cooper (LaPorte, Indiana) got the Eagles going with a first-place finish in 1000-yard freestyle (10:51.46). Cooper also won the 500-yard freestyle (5:15.96) to sweep her individual events. Freshman Reagan Holmes (Henderson, Nevada) followed Cooper with an impressive 200-yard freestyle win (1:57.73).
Freshman Hayden Shurtz (Ft. Wayne, Indiana) took the 400-yard individual medley (4:46.99) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.69) to sweep both her individual events. Shurtz was 0.03 seconds shy of her school record she set last weekend in the 100-yard breaststroke.
Freshman Maranda Uttke (Grafton, Wisconsin) recorded a final score of 187.35 in the one-meter diving event and 191.78 in the three meter event. Both of these scores shattered school records.

Freshman Cole Baker (Springville, Tennessee) recorded an impressive 50-yard freestyle time (21.81) finishing second by just 0.03 seconds. Sophomore Gabriel Groves (New Carlisle, Indiana) finished just behind Baker (21.88).
Freshman Nathan Deputy (Evansville, Indiana) recorded a final score of 235.5 in the one-meter diving event and 246.45 in the three-meter event finishing third in both events. Deputy broke a school record in the three-meter dive.

100-yard backstroke: Sophomore Garrett Crist (Bargersville, Indiana) (53.06)
