Nina Vadovicova Sets Pair of TCU Records As Horned Frogs Sweep BYU

FORT WORTH – TCU swimming and diving took down BYU in its home opener and first dual meet of the season Friday, winning 19 of the 40 events at the University Rec Center.

Nina Vadovicova set two school records in the pool while Ollie Cazaly earned two zone cuts and Anna Kwong earned zone cuts in all three diving events on the boards.

IN THE POOL
Vadovicova set two program records and earned NCAA “B” Cuts in the 100 and 200 Breastroke with times of 1:00:75 and 2:11.30 respectively.

The Frogs had the trifecta in three events against the Cougars. Jadon Wuilliez, Kito Comossato and Nikola Koltin swept the men’s 100 breastroke. Vadovicova, Claire Chahbandour and Ella Stein claimed the women’s 100 breastroke. To round out the sweeps, Alessandra SenisMorgan Gore and Inge Ehm finished 1-2-3 in the women’s 200 fly.

The women’s team took home the gold in all four relays. In the morning session, Tania QuaglieriJeanne Dahmen, Vadovicova and Serena Gould placed first in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:40.51. In the 400 yard freestyle, Gould, Mikayla Popham, Lexi Drap and Olivia Rhodes swam a time of 3:23.47.

In the evening session, Quaglieri Vadovicova, Dahmen and Rhaniska Gibbs earned the victory in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:40.62. To finish off the relay sweep, Gould, Popham, Rhodes and Gibbs swam a 1:32.93 in the 200 freestyle.

On the men’s side Milan Fabian was victorious in both the 200 and 500 freestyle (1:39.32, 4:29.22). The Frogs took first and third in the 200 medley relay with a times of 1:27.52 and 1:28.27 respectively.

To secure the win for the Horned Frogs Geremia Freri outswam his heat in the 200 IM with a time of 1:49.30.

ON THE BOARD
Cazaly took first place and earned zone cuts in both springboard events while also placing second on the platform. He bested his personal record on the 3 meter with a score of 393.85 to retain his spot in the TCU record book.

Kwong continues to shine for the Horned Frogs with victories on both the 1 meter and platform. The junior placed second on the 3 meter after Cougar opponent edged her 308.85-308.15 in the event.

UP NEXT
The Horned Frogs are set to head south to Austin on Friday, Oct. 20 to take on the Texas Longhorns.

FORT WORTH, Texas — Emma Marusakova accumulated a team-high 21 points as BYU women’s swim and dive fell 238-134 at TCU on Friday.

Marusakova finished the day strong with back-to-back wins in the 100 fly and 200 IM. The sophomore from Zilina, Slovakia clocked 54.75 in the 100 fly to come in just ahead of the Horned Frogs’ Jeanne Dahmen. Marusakova then won the 200 IM at 2:03.30, slicing five seconds off her previous best and surpassing Lilian Moore (2016) for No. 10 all-time at BYU.

“We battled hard for every win in so many close races,” said BYU swimming head coach Shari Skabelund. “We are proud of how hard our athletes fought today and excited for all of the growth happening on this team.”

Freshman Kara Martinson came up big for BYU in the evening session with a win in the 200 free and runner-up finish in the 200 back. Martinson cut over 4.5 seconds off her entry time to finish the 200 free at 1:49.57 and defeat TCU’s Kara Church by nearly two seconds. Just two meets into her collegiate career, Martinson stands just outside the program’s top-10 board in the 200 free.

The Weddington, North Carolina native then added four points to the Cougars’ tally with a time of 2:01.63 to take second in the 200 back. Martinson was just shy of overtaking the home team’s Mikayla Popham and was followed closely by teammate Liza Slade in third.

BYU women’s diving was led by a combined 19 points from Alexia Jackson and Sophia DeBergh.

“I’m proud of the energy we brought and that we endured three diving events in one go,” said head diving coach Tyce Routson. “It was great to see us come up with some great dives and zone cut scores early in the season.”

Jackson posted 237.70 to take second in the platform event then fell to fifth at 250.05 in the 1-meter. The sophomore from Mesa, Arizona bounced back strong and finished the night with a hard-earned 308.85 in the 3-meter. TCU’s Anna Kwong fell short of Jackson’s mark with a 308.15 of her own.

Despite coming in eighth in the platform, DeBergh came on strong to finish the meet with a third-place finishes in both 1 and 3-meter events. DeBergh recorded a 256.76 in the 1-meter and 248.60 in the three.

Regan Geldmacher and Halli Williams each contributed seven points to the Cougars’ cause. Geldmacher’s top finish of the day came in the 1000 free (10:18.99) while Williams helped the 400 free relay and 200 medley relay teams to runner-up finishes.

BYU competes again on Nov. 3 in a dual meet at UNLV.

FORT WORTH, Texas — Despite falling to TCU 200-172, BYU men’s swim and dive showed plenty of promise in dual meet action at the University Recreation Center on Friday.

“We battled hard for every win in so many close races,” said BYU swimming head coach Shari Skabelund. “We are proud of how hard our athletes fought today and excited for all of the growth happening on this team.”

Luigi Riva, Brad Prolo and Jordan Tiffany combined to score 49 of BYU’s 134 points. Bryce Broadhead and Chase Hindmarsh combined for 18 points while Abraham Barragan pitched in eight.

Tiffany posted the program’s second-best all-time 100 fly time at the Intermountain Shootout on Sept. 30 and wasted no time breaking that record on Friday. The junior from Pleasant Grove, Utah clocked 45.86 to win the event by nearly two seconds over the Horned Frogs’ Piotr Sadlowski. Tiffany’s time is good for No. 2 nationally behind only Ilya Kharun of top-ranked Arizona State.

The program’s previous men’s 100 fly record was set at 46.40 by Javier Nicolas Matta in 2022.

Tiffany also contributed to relay wins for the Cougars in the 400 medley and free relays. The squad of Tiffany, Prolo, Jacob Ballard and Riva recorded the nation’s ninth-best 400 MR time at 3:12.36. Tiffany, Joshua Reed, Camacho Salgado and Riva then finished in 2:57.37 to take first in the 400 FR and surpass Penn State for No. 8 nationally.

Individually, Prolo recorded wins in the 200 fly and 200 breast as well. Prolo controlled the 200 fly to the tune of a 4-second win at 1:45.15. In the 200 breast, Prolo registered a personal best at 1:58.04, and now ranks 10th over No. 3 Florida’s Aleksas Savickas.

Riva’s commanding presence in the relays was complemented by Friday evening wins in both 50 and 100 free. The junior from Milan, Italy finished the 50 free in 20.30 then narrowly eclipsed Sadlowski by 0.17 seconds with a 44.77 win in the 100.

BYU true freshman Bryce Broadhead showed promise in the 200 back as he cut nearly five seconds off his entry time to win the event at 1:47.11 over TCU’s Edgar Cicanci. Broadhead now ranks No. 9 all-time at BYU in the event, surpassing Gary Tan’s time set in 2001.

Chase Hindmarsh and Russell Haws led men’s diving with 15 combined points.

“I’m proud of the energy we brought and that we endured three diving events in one go,” said head diving coach Tyce Routson. “It was great to see us come up with some great dives and zone cut scores early in the season.”

Hindmarsh placed third in both the platform and 3-meter events while Haws scored in platform, 1-meeter and 3-meter. In just his second-career collegiate meet, Haws recorded the Cougars’ high-score in the 1-meter at 287.

BYU competes again on Nov. 3 in a dual meet at UNLV.
