UConn Wins BIG EAST Rivalry Matchup With Georgetown In Front of Raucous Crowd

Storrs, Conn. – The University of Connecticut Swimming and Diving Team defeated the Georgetown Hoyas Friday afternoon 175-125. The teams competed in front of a loud natatorium crowd with allegiances nearly evenly split between.

The Hoyas took momentum early winning the first five events. Of note, UConn swimmer Niamh Hofland led in the 1000y Freestyle before a mid-race disqualification. The Huskies wouldn’t be slowed; however, as the team fed off of a pair of strong wins by Freshman Olivia Herbert in the 200y Butterfly and Junior Maggie Donlevy in the 50y Freestyle. Niamh would get a chance to showcase her speed later taking first by a comfortable margin in the 500y Freestyle. An exciting and narrow come-from-behind win in the 400y Freestyle Relay sealed the meet victory for the Huskies at an even fifty point margin.

Of the meet’s impact, Coach Chris Maiello said, “Todays meet was good for the team in a few different ways, atmosphere, toughness, and resiliency are important to us. We observed these characteristics today. Credit our team – including our diving group, for their work so far this season. Now we need to learn from the competition and move on.”

Up Next – The Huskies return to the pool tomorrow morning hosting Villanova for the second of two conference meets this weekend.

WASHINGTON – Georgetown University’s women’s swimming & diving team fell to BIG EAST rival UConn on the road 175-125.

ON THE RECORD
“This was a great early test for our women against a really talented team in our conference. I’m proud of how they attacked their opportunities and supported one another from start to finish.”- said Head Coach Jack Leavitt about the meet.

WOMEN’S HIGHLIGHTS 

• Erin Hood, Genevieve Youngman, Cali Oyerly and Isabella Wylie finished first in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:45.09.
• In the 1000 free, Kira Agne and Ashley Vensel went first and second with times of 10:31.14 and 10:39.93, respectively.
• Madeline Malone earned first in the 200 free with a time of 1:53.15.
• In the 100 backstroke, Allie Sanchez won first with a time 1:05.02.
• Hood earned three first-place finishes in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.02), 200 breaststroke (2:20.64) and the 200 IM (2:06.56).
