Akron Trounces Toledo In MAC Action With 197-86 Victory

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron swimming and diving team hosted fellow MAC school Toledo for a dual meet on Friday evening at the Ocasek Natatorium. The Zips won after collecting 197 compared to the Rockets 86.

Opening the competition, Astrid Halvorsen won the 800 LC Meter Freestyle with a time of 9:25.24. Joelle Vogelmann took third to give the Zips some more points. Weronika Gorecka and Kaja Reinhardt then swam the two fastest times in the 200 LCM Freestyle. The 100 LCM Breaststroke was won by Madeline Dyer at 1:13.85. Akron had three swimmers earn points in the 200 Butterfly finishing second, third, and fourth.

Rebecca Reid finished five seconds ahead of the rest of the field in the 200 Backstroke. In the sprinit 50 Freestyle, Abby Daniel touched the wall first at 26.36 with teammates Brienne Trumpower (27.28) and Mia Latimer (27.29) right behind her to take the top three spots. Daniel would also win the 400 IM with Halvorsen and Kendall Craig taking second and third respectfully.

Latimer swam a 58.60 for the fastest time in the 100 Freestyle before the Zips would again sweep the top three positions in the 400 Freestyle with Rachel Sabotin (4:33.72), Reinhardt (4:34.80), and Maggie Patterson (4:34.95). Dyer would be the top finisher in the 200 Breaststroke with Vogelmann and Giovanna Cappabianca making it the fourth time Akron had the three fastest times.

Gorecka won her second individual event in the 100 Backstroke beating the second place finisher, fellow teammate Reid. Daniel had her third win in the 100 LCM Butterfly.

Off the springboards, Elizabeth Noble finished second in the 3-Meter Diving with a final score of 2.55.53. Paige Bush had a final score of 269.85 in the 1-Meter event to finish in the top spot. All three of Akron’s divers finished in the top four for their efforts off the 1-meter springboard.

To close out the evening, the Zips relay team of Gorecka, Reinhardt, Trumpower, and Reid finished in first place in the 400 LCM Freestyle Relay.

The Zips will be on the road next weekend for two dual meets. First up is at the Ohio State University on Friday November 3 before the Zips head south to face Ohio University on Saturday November 4.

AKRON, Ohio – The Toledo women’s swimming & diving team was defeated by a 197-86 margin by defending Mid-American Conference champion Akron on Friday evening in both team’s first conference dual meet of the season.

Freshman Leah Evans won the 200 butterfly for the second-straight meet, clocking a time of 2:19.73 in the Rockets’ first long course meet of the year. Evans also took runner-up in the 100 butterfly and third in the 100 freestyle. Senior diver Madison Giglio claimed a first-place finish on the 3M board with a score of 261.08 and a runner-up finish on the 1M board.

In addition to Evans’ and Giglio’s event win, the Rockets produced seven runner-up finishes. Senior Kennedy Lovell touched the wall at 58.78 in the 100 freestyle, nearly a second off the Toledo record (57.52) set by Leah Woodard in 2007.

Toledo will be back in the pool for its first home meet on Saturday, Nov. 4 at 11:00 a.m. in its Battle of I-75 matchup vs. Bowling Green at the UT Student Recreation Center Pool.
