Saturday Finals Heat Sheet

This morning, Chris Guiliano of Notre Dame swam a time of 47.98 100m freestyle to match his personal best time from the World Championship Trials. He will headline tonight’s final of the event as he will have the opportunity to swim the SCY version.

Junior Brearna Crawford of Indiana will highlight tonight’s 200 breaststroke final for the women. Crawford has had a breakout meet here in Columbus, as she took down her long standing 100m breaststroke PB from 2019 on Friday morning. She continued her momentum today by qualifying first in the 200 (2:29.09), erasing her previous personal best of 2:29.83 from May of 2022.

Brendan Burns was set to highlight the men’s 200 backstroke tonight, as he did not enter the 200 butterfly where he won the NCAA title in 2022. However, Burns no longer appears on the heat sheet. Burns won the 100 backstroke on Friday in a time of 45.29.

Junior Ching Gan of Indiana stopped the clock in a time of 15:48.70 to win the 1650 freestyle. This was a great swim for Gan, as it is the fastest time in the NCAA so far this year. She owns a personal best of 15:46.28, which she recorded en route to her NCAA runner-up finish last year.

A pair of Ohio State swimmers rounded out the top three with senior Maya Geringer (15:56.28) touching 2nd and junior Gwen Woodbury (15:58.37) finishing in 3rd.

The swim from Geringer was a best time by nearly four seconds, topping her previous best time of 15:59.82 from the 2022 NCAA Championships. Woodbury broke the 16-minute barrier for the first time tonight, taking out her previous best time of 16:04.35 from NCAAs last year.

Ohio State sophomore Sam Campbell swam a huge personal best time to win the 1650 freestyle. He touched the wall in a time of 14:48.25, eclipsing his previous best of 15:06.04 from the 2023 Big Ten Championships. Alex Metzler finished 2nd, making it a 1-2 finish for Ohio State. Metzler finished in 14:52.69, demolishing his previous best time by over 25 seconds.

Tyler Watson of Louisville finished 3rd overall with a time of 15:00.39. Watson has been as quick as 14:38.50, which he recorded at the SEC Championships last year while representing Florida.

Ohio State had 5 of the top 10 finishers in the event, with Josh Bedford (15:12.10) placing 7th, Alex Axon (15:12.77) taking 8th, and Mason Edmund (15:14.69) touching 9th.

Krista Marlin, a sophomore from Ohio State, took the win in the 200 backstroke in a time of 1:52.49. This was a substantial best time, taking down her previous mark of 1:55.68 from March of 2022. Marlin was challenged the whole way by Indiana junior Anna Peplowski. Peplowski, who won the 200 and 500 freestyles earlier in the meet, clocked 1:52.94. The time is a season best for Peplowski, but is well shy of her 1:51.32 best time from NCAAs last year.

Indiana sophomore Mya DeWitt touched in 3rd (1:54.39) to register a new best time. Earlier today DeWitt posted a time of 2:14.29 in the long course 200 back to narrowly miss her best of 2:14.02.

Notably, Indiana junior Kacey McKenna swam a time of 1:53.96 to win the B-Final. This was a big swim for McKenna, as she lowered her previous best time of 1:57.94 from this meet last year.

Notre Dame sophomore Tommy Janton won the 200 backstroke by nearly 2 seconds tonight, finishing in a final time of 1:40.34. Tanner Filion made it a 1-2 finish for the Fighting Irish as he touched in 1:42.21.

Hunter Gubeno of Cincinnati clocked a 1:42.40 to touch 3rd tonight. His personal best time of 1:41.47 was set at this meet a year ago. Jackson Millard of Louisville finished just 0.43 behind him, posting a best time by nearly a second in the process.

Indiana sophomore Alejandro Kincaid posted a time of 1:44.78 to win the B-Final, which would have placed him 8th in the A-Final had he qualified.

The women’s 100 freestyle final in Columbus was a very tight race, as senior Gabi Albiero of Louisville out-touched Amy Fulmer of OSU by 0.01 to win the 100 freestyle. Albiero clocked a 47.67 to the 47.68 recorded by Fulmer. Christiana Regenauer of Louisville was with the leaders the whole way, finishing just 0.06 behind the winning time to finish 3rd.

Kristina Paegle, the sophomore from Indiana, finished 4th tonight in a best time of 47.96. That lowers her previous best of 47.99 from the NCAA Championships last March.

Notably, Ashley Turak of Indiana took the ‘B’ final win tonight in a time of 48.78. This was a great swim for Turak, who just missed her best time of 48.56 from the 2021 NCAA Championships.

Chris Guiliano of broke the Notre Dame school record en route to winning the 100 freestyle tonight in Columbus. He recorded a time of 41.30, opening in 19.56 before closing in 21.74. He won by over a second, as Ruslan Gaziev of Ohio State touched in 2nd place (42.36).

Indiana finished 3-4-5 tonight led by junior Rafael Miroslaw who posted a time of 42.54. Mikkel Lee (42.67) and Finn Brooks (43.22) placed 4th and 5th.

The time from Lee tonight is a full second drop from his previous personal best of 43.67. Lee has had a big meet here in Columbus, as he also registered a big best time of 19.43 in the 50 freestyle on Thursday.

Louisville rounded out the rest of the field tonight, as they placed 5th through 10th. Each of the Louisville swimmers posted a time within the :43-second range.

Brearna Crawford of Indiana touched the wall first in the 200 breaststroke, clocking 2:07.62 for the win. That time is about a second shy of her 2:06.86 best time from the 2022 Big Ten Championships. Earlier today, Crawford qualified first for the final in a long course best time of 2:29.09, which erased her previous personal best of 2:29.83 from May of 2022.

Josie Panitz swam a season best time to grab 2nd in a time of 2:08.27 while Louisville junior Kim Emely Herkle swam a 2:10.95 to secure 3rd. The time produced by Herkle was a personal best, taking down her previous mark of 2:10.98 from the SMU Classic.

Hannah Bach, the 100 breaststroke champion from a night ago, touched the wall first in the ‘B’-final in a time of 2:12.94. The time by Bach is over five seconds slower than her personal best, but would have placed her 6th had she qualified for the ‘A’-final.

Indiana senior Jassen Yep finished his breakout meet with yet another big time drop, clocking 1:50.71 to win the 200 breaststroke. The swim from Yep tonight overtakes his previous best time of 1:52.33 from the Big Ten Championships last season.

Teammate Josh Matheny finished in 28.99 on the final 50 to secure 2nd place (1:51.13), while Max Reich completed the 1-2-3 sweep for Indiana by touching in 1:51.89 for 3rd. The time Reich produced tonight is a new best time, taking down the 1:52.35 he produced in December of 2022.

Denis Petrashov of Louisville touched in 1:52.87 to grab 4th tonight, while Tyler Christianson came with a half second of his best time to grab 5th.

WOMEN’S 200-YARD FLY – FINAL

Abby Hay of Louisville put up a time of 1:54.83 to take the 200 butterfly win. Hay, who has a best time of 1:53.21 to her name, took the race out strong through the first 100 in a time of 54.92. She closed in 59.91 to hold on for the win over 2nd place finisher Ava Whitaker of Indiana (1:56.51). The time by Whitaker is a new personal best, erasing her 1:57.04 from Winter Juniors last December.

Ohio State sophomore Jessica Eden clocked 1:57.86 for 3rd tonight, just off her best of 1:56.93 from the NCAA Championships last March.

Katie Forrester of Indiana, who recently placed 4th in the 200 LCM butterfly (2:12.90) at the Pan American Games, swam a time of 1:58.06 for 4th.

MEN’S 200-YARD FLY – FINAL

Indiana senior Tomer Frankel took the 200 butterfly win by just under a second, touching the wall in a time of 1:41.94. His teammate Armando Vegas swam a 1:42.80 to take 2nd, while Gustavo Saldo of Louisville touched third in 1:43.77.

Sophomore Drew Reiter dropped his personal best by over two seconds to touch 4th, clocking a time of 1:44.03 to take down his previous mark of 1:46.05.

The B-Final saw a great race between Notre Dame sophomore Tate Bacon and Louisville junior Mateo Miceli. They ultimately touched just 0.04 apart at the finish, with Bacon (1:44.57) taking the win over Miceli (1:44.61).

WOMEN’S 400-YARD FREE RELAY – FINAL

The Louisville women ended the competition with a convincing win in the 400 freestyle relay. The team of Gabi Albiero (48.11), Christiana Regenauer (47.23), Lucy Mehraban (48.16), and Julia Dennis (47.47) combined to post a winning mark of 3:10.97.

The Indiana relay placed 2nd with a time of 3:12.86. Kristina Paegle split a 47.21 on the third leg of the relay to put them within a half second of Louisville going into the final exchange.

Ohio State rounded out the top 3 in a time of 3:13.19. Amy Fulmer had the fastest split of the night, anchoring OSU home in 47.01.

MEN’S 400-YARD FREE RELAY – FINAL

Indiana and Notre Dame battled down to the final stroke in the 400 free relay, as Indiana (2:48.73) touched out Notre Dame (2:48.77) by 0.05.

After breaking the Notre Dame school record earlier in the session (41.30), Chris Guiliano lowered it again on the lead-off leg clocking a time of 41.23. The time of 2:48.77 from Notre Dame demolished their previous school record from the 2023 ACC Championships (2:50.14). Joining Guiliano on the record breaking relay was Abdelrahman Elaraby (42.71), Tommy Janton (42.41), and Tanner Filion (42.42).

The winning relay quartet from Indiana consisted of Rafael Miroslaw (42.58), Tomer Frankel (41.97), Gavin Wight (42.52), and Mikkel Lee (41.66).

Other than the breaststroke group, Miroslaw’s 200 and Barnett’s 400 IM, the Indiana men have looked flat.

Perhaps missing the “Tunisian piss missile” is hurting them more than it seems
