Pool Records Fall By The Wayside As Denver Secures Home Sweeps Over BYU, Wyoming

DENVER – The University of Denver men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs completed a two-day sweep over regional rivals Wyoming and BYU on Saturday afternoon inside El Pomar Natatorium.

El Pomar records continued to fall on Saturday. Marco Nosack edged out the men’s 200 IM time with a 1:48.66. Denver also picked up five NCAA B Standards on the weekend. Mina Ada Solaker earned a 400IM standard, Dylan Wright got another B-cut in the men’s 200 back. Jessica Maeda earned hers in the 200 breast. Alex Lynch also got a 200 breast B-Cut and Kieran Watson earned a 500 free B-Cut on Friday.

How it Happened:
Denver opened the second session with a win in the 400 medley relay. Ali BeayJessica MaedaInes Marin and Erika Remington backed up last night’s win in the 200 with a time of 3:42.17 in the 400.

In the final distance race of the two day meet, Denver took second and third in the women’s 1000. Sabrina Rachjaibun grabbed second in 10:16.40 and Nika Spehar grabbed third in 10:25.61.

Kieran Watson completed the men’s distance sweep, taking Saturday’s 1000 free with a time of 9:18.35.

Denver took the top two spots in the women’s 200 IM. Jessica Maeda continued her impressive season with a 2:04.52 to lead the field, while Lilly Zippel was right behind her in second in 2:05.21.

Marco Nosack broke his pool record in the next event, beating Jake Eccleston’s time of 1:48.78 set in 2022. Jason McMechan finished third in the event with a time of 1:51.31.

Erika Remington won the sprint free on Saturday afternoon, swimming the 50 in 23.01. Donat Fabian completed a Denver 50 free sweep with a time of 20.08.

Mia Moulden gave Denver its seventh victory of the afternoon with a 2:02.92 in the women’s 200 fly. Rachjaibun earned second in 2:04.49.

Dylan Wright and Brandon Chapman grabbed second and third place finishes in the men’s 200 fly. Wright earned a 1:47.87 to take second, nearly a second ahead of the pool record entering the day, while Chapman took third in 1:50.06.

Beay outswam the field in the 100 back, leading a trio of Pioneers that earned spots in the top four in the event. Beay clocked in at 54.99, Zippel finished second in 56.48 and Darian Koler grabbed fourth in 56.49.

Wright completed a backstroke sweep on the weekend with a 48.69 in the men’s 100.

In diving, Zyad Morsy completed his weekend sweep with a score of 358.05 in the 1-meter. Kaitlin Calvery led the Denver women with a second place finish and a score of 301.43.

Denver will have next week off before the Pioneers host Air Force and Seattle in the annual Sprint Eliminator on January 27. Diving begins at 10 a.m.  MT and swimming will begin at 1:30 p.m. MT

PROVO, Utah — BYU men’s swimming won each of the relay events and brought down three pool records as competition concluded at Denver’s El Pomar Natatorium on Saturday.

“This was an incredibly fast meet,” said BYU head swimming coach Shari Skabelund. “Our athletes battled hard and came up with some amazing swims for this time of year.”

After winning the 200 medley and 400 free relays on Friday, the Cougars continued their ways from the get-go on Saturday with a first-place finish in the 400 medley relay. Tanner and Emerson Edwards, along with Brad Prolo and Joshua Reed combined to clock an El Pomar Natatorium pool record 3:13.38. The previous stood since 2014.

Luigi Riva, Prolo and the Edwards brothers also broke a seven-year-old pool record with their 1:27.05 win in the 200 medley relay on Friday.

While shy of a pool record, BYU’s 200 free relay squad of Tanner Edwards, Reed, Diego Camacho Salgado and Riva swam the event in 1:20.51 to collect the Cougars’ fourth and final relay win of the meet.

Prolo won BYU’s second and third individual events of the meet on Saturday, breaking pool records in both. The senior from San Clemente, California eclipsed a decade-old pool record in the 200 fly to win at 1:47.05 over Denver’s Dylan Wright. Prolo finished the day with a winning 53.75 in the 100 breast, sufficient to beat the Pioneers’ Alex Lynch by over a second and break a pool record set in 2006.

The Cougars posted six more top-3 finishers on Saturday, including runner-up results from Payton Plumb, Tama Tuitama, Tanner Edwards and Camacho Salgado.

BYU outscored Wyoming 199-135 but came up short of Denver 176.5-157.5.

PROVO, Utah — BYU women’s swim and dive concluded competition in meets at Denver and UCLA on Saturday.

Emma Marusakova, Mackenzie Lung, Colette Masino and Julia Bartell combined to help BYU’s “A” squad take third in the 400 medley relay at 3:46.29. The Cougars finished the day with another third-place relay finish, this time in the 200 free. Halli Williams, Bartell, Tahis Ibáñez and Lily Flint teamed-up there to go 1:33.55.

Williams recorded BYU’s top individual finish of the day with a runner-up spot at 23.25 in the 50 free. The Cougars added five more top-5 individual finishes on the day from Marusakova (200 individual medley), Flint (50 free), Mackenzie Lung (100 breast) and Victoria Schreiber (1000 Free). In just her second collegiate meet, mid-year enrollee Abril Arias clocked 2:07.76 to finish sixth in the 200 IM.

BYU scored 110 points to Wyoming’s 224 and 87 to Denver’s 247.

DENVER, Colo. (Jan. 12, 2024) – The University of Wyoming swimming and diving teams has wrapped up the first day at the University of Denver’s El Pomar Natatorium in a tri-meet with the Pioneers and BYU to start the 2024 spring season on Friday. The team finished the opening day with five first-place finishes and first-place finish in diving. The teams also set three- top-10 (two Cowgirl and one Cowboy) marks in school history along with the Cowgirls breaking a pool record.

“We had some phenomenal swims today,” UW head coach Dave Denniston said.  “On the men’s side, Charlie Clark dominated the 400IM and Quinn Cynor had a great race in the 100 free. We swam some very fast times today and showed a lot of grit. The women are competing on a new level, and we won several races. We are still a bit behind going into tomorrow, but if we keep swimming like we did today, we will make up a lot of ground.”

The day was started with diver Alicia Gonzalez coming in first in the women’s one meter dive with a final score of 272.10 which was almost five points better than the second-place finisher.

Carly Palmer won the women’s 100-yard freestyle with a time of 49.82 for the fifth fastest time in UW history, and Tara Joyce, took second place with a time of 49.95 for sixth all-time at UW. Heidi Billings won the women’s 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:00.37. Maisyn Klimczak won the women’s 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:54.24. Brynlee Busskohl took second in the women’s 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:15.63.

Quinn Cynor won the men’s 100-yard freestyle with a time of 44.62 for ninth all-time at Wyoming. In the men’s 400-yard individual medley, Charlie Clark won with a time of 3:56.02. Gavin Smith took second in the men’s 100-yard butterfly with a time of 48.03. Clark finished second in the men’s 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:32.39.

In relay action, the Cowgirls’ relay team of Carly PalmerKali FranckowiakVeronika Ozimek. and Tara Joyce took first place in the women’s 400-yard freestyle relay with a pool record time of 3:21.58. In addition, the Cowgirls’ relay team of Emily GilesCarly PalmerKali Franckowiak, and Lauren Swartz finished second in the women’s 200-yard medley relay with a final time of 1:40.56.

On the men’s side, the Cowboys relay team of Quinn CynorJohn WarginGavin Smith, and Matthew Lang took second place with a final time of 1:27.95.

In the team portion of the event, the Cowboys trail both BYU and Denver, but are within striking distance. The Cowgirls lead have a solid lead over BYU and trail Denver by a slim margin.

The final day of this tri-meet is set to get underway tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. and diving at 2 p.m.

DENVER, Colo. (Jan. 13, 2024) – The University of Wyoming swimming and diving team wrapped up the final day of a tri-meet with Denver and BYU on Saturday inside El Pomar Natatorium. The team boasted four individual winners and one relay team win during the final day.

“Our women had a great weekend with several PR times,” head coach Dave Denniston said. “We really showcased dominance in the freestyle events and looked really strong both days. Freshmen Katie Ford and Tessa Bendokas had a breakout meet. On the men’s side, Quinn Cynor remains undefeated on the year and handled a very talented field in the 200 freestyle to win by over five seconds.”

On the women’s side, Tara Joyce won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:49.38. Maisyn Klimczak claimed first in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:10.82, which is her quickest time of the season. The Cowgirls finished one-two in the 100-yard breaststroke, as Carly Palmer topped the field with a time of 1:01.02, and Brynlee Busskohl touched second with a time of 1:02.20. Kayla Cunningham tied for second in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 56.48.

In relay action, the Cowgirls won the 200-yard freestyle relay. The collection of Palmer, Lauren SwartzRachael Horne, and Joyce turned in a final time of 1:32.09. Wyoming placed second in the 400-yard medley relay. Emily Giles, Busskohl, Tessa Bendokas, and Joyce logged a time of 3:44.56.

In the men’s competition, Quinn Cynor finished first in the 200-yard freestyle, boasting a time of 1:36.17. Charlie Clark touched second in the 1000-yard freestyle after swimming a 9:24.96.

Day 2 wrapped up with Alicia Gonzalez winning the 3-meter event with a score of 309.90. It was her second win of the weekend.

The Cowgirls beat BYU, 224-10, however, lost to the Denver, 184.5-149.5. The Cowboys fell to BYU, 199-135 and to Denver, 216-118.

Up next, the Cowboys are at a dual meet in Green River against Utah on Friday at 4 p.m. The Cowgirls’ next event is also on the road, as the team travels to Albuquerque on Saturday for a dual meet against New Mexico.
