BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Marshall University Swimming and Diving team (3-2) swept its tri-meet against the Buffalo Bulls, 212-157, and the Duquesne Dukes, 242-119, Saturday in Buffalo. The Herd also concluded action at the UB Diving Invite as Sunday’s action was canceled due to inclement weather.
“Always great to walk away with two wins,” Herd swimming and diving head coach Ian Walsh said. “We went up against two well coached teams and the women showed a lot of toughness today. I thought our two individual swims of the day were Mia’s 200 Backstroke and Klava’s 100 Freestyle. Both season-bests and executed their race plans really well. Our 400 Freestyle Relay was excellent, and probably our best swim of the weekend.”
MU started out Saturday’s action strong with Mia McBride, Audrey West, Madeline Hart, Klava Katayama taking the 400 Medley Relay with a time of 3:44.28. This was followed by Eszter Labana taking the 1000 Freestyle (10:31.84), Katayama winning the 100 Freestyle (52.13), McBride capturing first place in the 200 Backstroke (2:03.09) and team of Hart, Katayama, Parker Lynch and Molly Warner taking the 400 Freestyle Relay (3:29.82).
The Herd swept the podium in a pair of events with Banton (2:20.69), West (2:22.03) and Jenna Bopp (2:23.03) sweeping the 200 Breaststroke and West (2:07.53), Banton (2:09.38) and Allison Dodd (2:10.93) taking the top-three places in the 200 Individual Medley.
“We won seven of the eight swimming events today and our divers had a strong showing on our 1m boards this afternoon,” Walsh commented. “Grace Kelsheimer led the charge on the diving side and our other individual wins were by pretty wide margins. Paige, Eszter and Audrey put together some quality races as well.”
Kelsheimer led the way in the 1-Meter Dive finishing fifth with a score of 250.55. In the Team Dive, Marshall scored 217.60 points for third.
“There were a lot do takeaways from this weekend that we can apply to the next two weeks of training,” Walsh said. “We look forward to celebrating our seniors in our final meet of the year in two weeks. The team is in a good spot, and we’ll get back to work on Monday.”

Buffalo, N.Y. – The Duquesne University swimming & diving team continued competition in day two of the tri-meet at Buffalo, with Marshall on Saturday inside the Alumni Arena Natatorium & Dorsi Raynolds Pool.
Graduate student Madeline Marks highlighted competition Saturday for the Dukes, securing a first-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:05.21. The 400-yard medley relay started things off in day two with Duquesne capturing the bronze. The team of Haley Scholer, Sydney Severini, Julia Sobun, and Lexi Sundgren registered a time 3:54.45.
The 1,000-yard freestyle followed as junior Orla Egan took the silver while posting a time of 10:34.11 as sophomore Aislinn Mooney touched the wall at 10:54.73. Egan also took part in the 200-yard IM where she registered a time of 2:11.11 to take fourth. Severini and Marks also competed in the event after carding times of 2:13.89 and 2:41.35.
Four different Dukes competed in the 100-yard freestyle, with two of them finishing in the top four. Senior Molly Brennan collected the bronze after clocking in a time of 53.34 while graduate student Natalia Fryckowska finished right behind her in fifth at 53.40.
In the 200-yard backstroke, Scholer clocked in a time of 2:04.34 to finish second while senior Reagan Linkous (2:05.37) and junior Hayley Taylor (2:07.42) finished fourth and sixth respectively. The 400-yard freestyle relay concluded things as the Dukes had a pair of teams finish fourth and fifth. The team of Gaby Jenkins, Sundgren, Brennan, and Scholer touched the wall at 3:34.58 while Sobun, Kayla Johnson, Katie Simpson, and Fryckowska finished with a time of 3:37.36.
“The first day was a little up and down,” head swimming coach Dave Sheets said. “It took a few swims to shake off the bus ride. On the second day we wanted to focus more on race execution and less on what the scoreboard was telling us. Overall, day 2 was much better than Day 1. The ladies were a little more patient and focused on putting the small things together.”
The Duquesne diving team also took part at Buffalo with sophomore Ashley Felitsky competing in the one-meeter and compiling a score of 231.15. Classmate Kendall Nigh also took part, posting a final score of 168.85. During day one, Felitsky carded a final score of 233.40 in the three-meet diving.
“The divers had a consistent overall performance,” head diving coach Jeff Brown said. “Ashley excelled on 1M against a tough MAC field. The divers are improving and continue to work on the more difficult dives.”
Day three of the UB Diving Invite scheduled for Sunday morning has been canceled due to the on-going winter storm in Buffalo, N.Y.
