IUPUI Shines On Senior Day With Sweeps of Butler, Wabash

INDIANAPOLIS – The IUPUI swim and dive defeated Butler and Wabash in their senior day meet on Friday. The Jags celebrated nine seniors while freshman Youssef Magdy broke the program record in the 1000 freestyle. Eighteen different Jaguars collected first-place finishes.

On the women’s side, nine Jags earned first-place finishes with Lillian Brandt and Emmaleigh Zietlow each collected two top finishes. Brandt took first in the 100 free with a time of 52.07 and the 100 fly with a time of 55.54. Zietlow earned first in the 200 free (1:49.16) and the 500 free (4:51.15).

Other first place finishes for the women’s team are Samantha Lee (1000 free – 10:22.42), Malayna Mancinelli (100 back – 58.21), Victoria Surdyka (100 breast – 1:05.01), Tori Barnet (50 free – 24.60), Kate Larsen (200 fly – 2:07.21), senior Lauren Thompson (200 back – 2:08.27) and Emily Hoekstra (2:22.00).

For the men’s team, eight Jaguars clocked top times. Ben KimmelNathan Rariden and Spencer Jyawook each collected two first-place finishes. Senior Kimmel took first in the 200 back with a time of 1:47.35 and the 200 free with a time of 1:40.91. Rariden earned first in the 200 fly (1:49.99) and the 500 free (4:29.74). Senior Jyawook finished first in the 100 fly (47.92) and the 100 free (44.81).

Freshman Madgy finished first in the 1000 free with a new program record time of 9:15.13 beating the previous record by almost three seconds. Freshman Jack Gallob (100 back – 48.99), Kevin Burke (50 free – 19.93) and Logan Kelly (200 breast – 1:56.87) each collected a first place finish as well.

On the boards for the Jags Alaina Heyde and Sebastian Otero swept the competition. Heyde took first in the 1-meter dive with a score of 307.05 and the 3-meter dive with a score of 291.23. Otero swept the men’s competition with a score of 351.08 in the 1-meter and 392.40 in the 3-meter. Adam Schmehl earned his zone cut score in the 3-meter dive with a score of 346.65 to finish second.

The men’s team finished the meet, defeating Wabash by a score of 203 to 89 while the women’s team defeated Butler by a score of 216 to 67.

INDIANAPOLIS – The Butler swim team competed against the Jaguars at the IUPUI Natatorium over the weekend. Sadie Brown highlighted the action with a win in the 400 IM and the Bulldogs also won the 200 Free Relay.

Brown was the top swimmer in the 400 IM after posting a time of 4:49.02. Teammate Caroline Zimner earned second place in the event (4:49.94).

The 200 Free Relay included Kate SchillingGianna LefflerOlivia Stotts, and Alani Hightower-Bend. That group won the event with a time of 1:40.98.

Brown was also the top BU swimmer in the 1000 Yard Free. She placed third with a time of 11:12.83 and Elizabeth Naylor was close behind in fourth (11:13.59).

BU also saw a third-place finish in the 200 Free with Sam Tomic touching the wall at 1:58.27. Tomic paced BU in the 500 Free as well with a time of 5:34.13.

Butler’s 400 Medley Relay team of Alani Hightower-BendKate SchillingLauren BergmanOlivia Stotts had a fourth-place finish with a time of 4:00.16.

Hightower-Bend was also active for BU in the 100 Fly and 100 Back. She finished third in the Fly (59.83) and fourth in the Back (1:00.43).

Schilling swam well for BU in the 200 Breast and 200 Fly. Her time of 2:30.19 landed her in fourth place in the Breast and she clocked in at 2:17.88 for fifth in the Fly.

In the sprints, Stotts and Bergman finished back-to-back in the 50 Free with times of 25.32 and 25.64. They took home fourth and fifth place. Stotts and Tomic swam well in the 100 Free. Stotts placed fourth with a time of 55.37 and Tomic was right there for fifth (55.94).

BU also got a top-five finish from Olivia McKee in the 200 Back (2:10.80).

The Bulldogs will return to action on Sunday, Jan. 28 when they host the 15th Annual Butler Invitational. Action in Fishers will begin at 12 PM and include Xavier, Valparaiso, Youngstown State, UIndy, Eastern Illinois and Lewis.

The Wabash College swimming and diving team spent the weekend competing against NCAA Division I programs from Indiana and Illinois, coming up with one victory in three dual meets. The Little Giants lost 203-89 to IUPUI on Friday night before splitting a double-dual at Eastern Illinois Saturday. Wabash defeated EIU 143-94 and lost to the University of Evansville 163-42.

Nicholas Plumb raced to second place in the 1,000-yard freestyle at Saturday’s double-dual against EIU and Evansville. Plumb finished the race in 10:18.19. Williams Renie added a third-place finish with a time of 10:32.37. Quinn Sweeney earned a second-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly Saturday by completing the race in 53.32. Ethan Johns picked up a third-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 48.96. Xander Straw swam to third place in the 500-yard freestyle, finishing in 5:03.75.

The Little Giants competed against the NCAA DI program from IUPUI at the IUPUI Natatorium in Indianapolis. Sweeney placed third in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:42.90. Plumb picked up a third-place finish in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:53.31. Plumb scored first-place points in the 400-yard individual medley by finishing in 4:18.16. Dane Market took second place with a time of 4:29.42. Morgan Govekar scored a third-place finish with a time of 4:47.02.

Eddie DaMataJustice Wenz, and Market scored first-, second-, and third-place finishes in the 100-yard breaststroke. DaMata completed the race in 1:00.44, while Wenz touched the wall in 1:02.35. Market turned in a time of 1:02.53.

Johns, Sweeney, John Allen, and Daniel Streeter picked up first-place points in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a combined time of 1:27.51.

Wabash is now gearing up for the annual North Coast Athletic Conference Championships scheduled for February 14-17 at Denison University in Granville, Ohio.
