EDITOR NOTE: Due to storms, the start time for Swim Cortez has been moved to 12am PST on Monday, November 4th.
In less less than 3 days, Paul Lundgren will start a journey across the Sea of Cortez, from near Guaymas, Mexico, on the mainland. He will swim 80+ miles, taking 48 hours or more, to cross the Sea, famously called “the world’s aquarium” by Jacques Cousteau. Lundgren will swim with migrating great white sharks, seasonal fluctuations of toxic jelly fish blooms, carnivorous squid and unpredictable, ferocious currents. 250,000 strokes later, if things go as planned, he’ll reach Baja Mexico on the other side, just north of Loreto. Depending on the weather and tides, Paul will begin his swim sometime between Nov. 4, 3 a.m. and Nov. 5, 8 a.m.
Lundgren is drawn to swim across the Sea of Cortez. In the process, he is hoping to raise awareness for a Loreto, Mexico-based non-profit, Eco Alianza, that teaches the children there about conservationism.
“I just want to share my passion and hopefully inspire others to connect with theirs. I believe connecting with nature will inspire stewardship for earth. Eco Alianza is an important organization to me because they are stewards of the Sea and its surrounding region. If I can inspire folks to support Eco Alianza I will achieve more than I ever dreamed swimming across the Sea.”
