HOUSTON, Texas — The University of Miami swimming team impressed in its tri-meet at the University of Houston Friday afternoon, sweeping decisions over the host Cougars and Rice Owls.
Despite competing without their diving contingent, the Hurricanes topped UH, 165-129, and also beat Rice, 193-68.
Miami improved to 9-1 this season in dual meet competitions with two impressive wins away from its home pool. Miami’s swimmers totaled 14 best times, one school record and seven times that cracked the program’s ‘top 10’ times list.
The Hurricanes showed some early desire by taking the top two spots in the 200-yard medley relay to open the race. The Hurricanes ‘A’ entry won in 1:38.33, while its ‘B’ entry (1:40.04) was not far behind.
Miami’s depth showed in the opening stages of the meet, including a 1-2-3 finish in the 200-yard freestyle. Talia Bates set a new school standard in her signature event (1:45.71), while Adrianna Cera (1:46.08) and Jane Fitzgerald (1:48.07) were second and third, respectively.
Emma Shuppert (52.73), Leah Treglia (54.33) and Sarah Sensenbrenner (54.43) took the top three spots in the 100-yard backstroke to build on Miami’s lead, while Bates added a second win in the 50-yard freestyle (22.85). Jacey Hinton was second (22.90).
Bates, Fitzgerald and Hinton captured the top three finishes in the 100-yard freestyle, while Sensenbrenner, MK Kelley and Emma Lunn did the same in the 200-yard backstroke. Adrianna Cera (500-yard freestyle) and Giulia Carvalho (100-yard butterfly) added late victories to help seal the Hurricanes’ sweep.

HOUSTON – The University of Houston Swimming & Diving program defeated Rice, 203-91, but fell to Miami (Fla.), 165-129, inside the CRCW Natatorium on Friday afternoon.
The Cougars ended the meet with nine podium finishes including sophomore Eden Humphery breaking a pair of school records with a time of 9:55.68 in the 1,000-yard freestyle and 12:29.50 in the 1,650-yard freestyle. Humphrey also finished first in the 500-yard freestyle.
The Houston 200-yard medley relay team A, featuring freshman Elizabeth Jimenez, junior Henrietta Fangli, junior Abbie Alvarez and sophomore Liya Goupil, started the meet off strong by earning third place with a time of 1:43.12.
Fangli placed first in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:00.58. She went on to compete in the 200-yard breaststroke and earned another first-place finish.
Freshman Nora Hetyei not only earned second place but her time of 55.20 moved her into the top-10 in program history in the 100-yard backstroke. She also claimed second in the 200-yard individual medley.
A pair of Cougars joined the podium in the 200- yard butterfly. Sophomore Alondra Ortiz finished in first with a time of 1:58.14 while senior Abby Jackson came in third with a time of 1:59.56.
Graduate student Audrey McKinnon had a time of 2:14.02 to finish first in the 200-yard breaststroke.
The Cougars swept the diving awards as senior Hedda Grelz placed first in both the three meter (346.80) and one meter (314.70), freshman Michelle McLeod was second in the three meter (346.28) and one meter (310.05). Senior Emilia Waters placed third in both the three meter (330.60) and one meter (290.93).

In Brief: Rice dropped a pair of simultaneous dual matches against Houston (203-91) and Miami (193-68) on Friday at the CRWC Natatorium in Houston.
The Details: Junior Arielle Hayon posted Rice’s lone event victory on the day, placing first in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:02.07. Hayon’s time ranks sixth in the AAC this season. Hayon also placed second in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.50 and third in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 52.78. Freshman Siiri Einio also posted multiple top-three finishes, placing third in both the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke with respective times of 1:01.90 and 2:16.78. Einio now ranks fifth in the AAC this season in the 100-yard breaststroke. Junior Ella Dyson recorded Rice’s final podium finish of the day, placing third in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 16:55.91.

The Owls will be celebrating Senior Day beginning at 10:20 a.m. Rice will honor seven seniors: Lauren Brantley, Mimi Filkin, Briana Gellineau, Lauren Hurt, Imogen Meers, Elizabeth Myers and Hunter Smith.
