DENVER – The University of Denver men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs swept the top spot in the annual Sprint Eliminator on Saturday afternoon inside El Pomar Natatorium.

Denver won 28 events on Saturday, and broke four Sprint Eliminator Meet records in the process.

How It Happened:
Denver opened the meet with a 1-2 finish in the women’s 200 medley relay. Ali BeayJessica MaedaInes Marin and Erika Remington combined for a time of 1:40.60 to take the top spot.

The Pioneer men’s B-Relay edged its 200 medley A-Relay with a 1:30.01 from the quartet of Dylan WrightKelby ModeneBrandon Chapman and Frank Tirone.

DU swept the podium and took six of the top seven spots in the women’s 200 free. Ines Marin earned an NCAA B Cut time of 1:47.93, Daniela Alfaro clocked in at 1:51.20 and Jessica Maeda recorded a 1:51.27.

The Denver men took five of the top six spots in the 200 free. Wright led that group with a first place finish in a time of 1:38.53.

Saturday’s sprint championship style meet began with the 50 fly prelims. Denver qualified six of its swimmers to the women’s 50 fly semis, five to the men’s 50 fly semis, five to the women’s 50 back, five to the men’s 50 back, four to the women’s 50 breast, five to the men’s 50 breast, four to the women’s 50 free and five to the men’s 50 free. The prelims were highlighted by Erika Remington’s 22.74 in the women’s 50 free, a new Sprint Eliminator Meet Record.

The women’s 500 free split up the sprint’s prelims and semifinals on Saturday. Daniela Alfaro led five Pioneers that finished in the top six with an event-winning time of 4:55.58. Sabrina Rachjaibun was close behind in second with a 4:58.98.

With a field of eight in the semifinal rounds, and a maximum of two per team able to advance, Marin and Beay advanced to the finals of the women’s 50 fly to open up that portion of the meet.

Denver put two in the men’s 50 fly finals, qualifying Chapman and Jason McMechan

The Pioneers got two more finalists in both genders of the backstroke. Beay, Lilly Zippel, Simmons and Wright all reached the final.

Maeda’s Sprint Eliminator Meet record of 28.22 in the 50 breast highlighted the semifinals and Zoe Lynch joined her in Saturday’s final.

Fabian and Kelby Modene got the men two more in the men’s 50 breast.

Finally, Denver put four more (two men, two women) in the 50 free finals. Remington and Lucyshyn qualified for the DU women, while Tirone and Luke Milburn reached the men’s final.

The men provided a break between the semifinals and the finals in the Sprint Eliminator meet with their 500 yard free race. Kieran Watson led a group of five Pioneers that took the top-five spots with his 4:31.08. Dylan Mes finished second in 4:34.96 and Joseph Purdy got third in 4:37.04 to round out the podium.
Denver’s first sprint final win came in the women’s 50 back. Beay clocked in at 25.69 to tke first and Zippel finished in 26.10 to take second.

DU’s women earned another 1-2 in the 50 breast. Maeda clocked in with another meet record of 28.09 in the event to take first, while Lynch took second in 29.48.

Fabian won the men’s 50 breast with a time of 25.11, while Modene took third in 25.41.

Remington and Lucyshyn closed out the women’s sprint format with a 1-2 finish in the 50 free with times of 22.75 and 23.29, respectively.

Tirone won the men’s 50 free with his 20.05.

Stepping back out of the sprints, Maeda led a trio of Pioneers on the podium in the women’s 200 IM with a 2:04.14. Zippel finished second in 2:05.18 and Sarah Turchanik finished third in 2:05.92.

Denver’s men earned four of the top five spots in the men’s 200 IM. Nosack won the event with a Sprint Eliminator Meet record time of 1:48.83. McMechan took second in 1:51.01.

The 200 free relays rounded out Saturday’s action in El Pomar. Remington, Lucyshyn, Beay and Marin combined for a 1:32.89 to win the women’s race, while Fabian, Tirone, Milburn and Nikola Tadic clocked in at 1:20.75 to take the men’s event.

Denver’s divers will head to the Air Force Diving Invitational from February 1-3 in Colorado Springs. The swimmers will be back in action February 9-10 for the First Chance Invitational on El Pomar.

DENVER- Following the events of Friday’s Senior Night celebration, Air Force immediately returned to the pool to compete at the Colorado Sprint Championships against Denver and Seattle. The Falcons scored 108.00 points to place second among the three teams.

Considering the knockout format of the meet, Air Force provided a number of participants in the day’s final swims.

C4C Amber Martin advanced to the final round of the 50 Butterfly where the freshman swam to a winning time of 24.91. Her time in the event now stands as her own personal best.

In the 50 Backstroke, Anna Ashley placed third, clocking in in at 26.51. The 50 Breaststroke Finals saw Maeve Linscott touch out at 29.60 to earn a third-place standing. In the same event, her 29.45 in her semifinal swim became her new personal benchmark in the event.

Abby Turner proceeded to finish third in the 50 Freestyle Finals, closing the race with a 23.52.

In the lone heat of the 200 Freestyle, Ryan Mills offered the Falcons their strongest time following her 1:51.59. Mills would go on to place fourth in the race.

The 200 IM was also a one-off, where Lauren Arnold (2:06.11) and Alex Clark (2:06.25) slotted in the fourth and fifth positions.

In the initial race of the day, Ashley, Mills, Mandy Fleetwood, and Shayla Markle comprised Air Force’s quickest time, combining for a 1:44.37 in the 200 Medley Relay.

Clark, Mills, Turner, and Kai-Min Tsuei closed the afternoon with the 200 Freestyle Relay, as the foursome’s 1:33.80 was good for second among the seven teams.

Next, Air Force will host its annual Diving Invitational, starting Thursday, February 1.

DENVER- Less than a day after competing at Cadet Nataorium, Air Force traveled to Denver for the annual Colorado Sprint Championships where the Falcons placed second among the three competing teams with 91.00 points.

“It was a great weekend of racing for us,” said head swimming coach Rob Clayton. “It was another huge step forward this week to get ready for the WAC Championships.”

Given the knockout stages of each swim, a handful of Falcons managed to advance to their respective final rounds.

C1C Joseph Moore was the lone Falcon to notch an event win, as the senior edged out a victory in the 50 Butterfly Finals following a time of 22.05. His time in the event now stands a personal best.

“The weekend was highlighted by Joseph Moore,” said Clayton. “He just did a fantastic job.”

James Winterfield earned one of the four slots in the 50 Backstroke Finals, representing Air Force with a time of 23.27. Placing fourth, the time becomes the sophomore’s new career best.

Winterfield also finished second in the 200 Freestyle (1:38.61) for a new season-best, and third in the 200 IM (1:51.06).

“James had a great showing all weekend long,” Clayton added. “He’s been much faster than he’s been all season and really looks ready to go.”

In the 50 Breaststroke, Tommy Nagle offered a solid showing, finishing in a tight second-place standing. Nagle touched out at 25.28 to secure a new personal best.

“Tommy put together some super swims this weekend as well,” said Clayton.

The Air Force 200 Medley Relay team placed third, as the foursome of Moore, Winterfield, Bridon Rosales and Chase Dwornicki combined for a time of 1:30.79. The final swim of the day saw Moore, Dwornicki, Gavin Peterman, and Kai Tiede place fourth in the 200 Freestyle Relay, closing with a 1:23.84.

“I’m very proud of the guys and the way they fought and persevered,” Clayton said.

Next, the divers will take over Cadet Natatorium, as the Falcons host the Air Force Diving Invitational starting Thursday, February 1.

DENVER, Colo. – Seattle U men’s and women’s swimming wrapped up their 2-day trip through Colorado, competing in a Sprint Eliminator at the University of Denver on Saturday.

“Really proud of the effort today,” said head coach Joe Dykstra. “The women went faster in the medley relay than they have all season, the men’s relays continued to impress, and we saw more season bests and lifetime bests.”

Danielis Kvederis finished first in the 50 Backstroke with a time of 22.24. Sammy Mosier finished fourth in the 50 Fly (25.75) and fourth in the 50 Free (23.92).

The relay team of Nicholas Imig, Kvederis, Hawkins Wendt, and Cole Lanting finished second in the 200 Free Relay with a time of 1:22.42.

“Watching some of our sprinters advance through all 3 rounds of the skins elimination was exciting, especially Sammy Mosier and Cole Lanting who advanced all the way through in both fly and free,” Dykstra added. “Danielis’s win in the 50 back in a 22 low was awesome, especially since he kept getting faster through the rounds!”

The Redhawks will now turn focus to the WAC Championships starting Feburary 22 in Pharr, Texas.
