Johns Hopkins Women Best Marywood and St. Francis (PA) at Thomas Murphy Invitational

Day 1: Nov. 1, 2013

BALTIMORE, MD – The Johns Hopkins women’s swim team placed second in four out of five swimming events on day one of the Thomas Murphy Invitational Friday. Hopkins trails host Loyola, 77-30, but leads Marywood, 78-29, and St. Francis, 55-36.

Hopkins opened the meet with a second-place finish in the 400 Medley Relay. Sophomore Sean McGrath, freshmanPilar Shimizu and seniors Taylor Kitayama and Sarah Rinsma swam a time of 4:00.18. The JHU team of junior Hannah Benn, freshmen Kailyn Koh and Shirley Chan and junior Jillian Liwacz placed fifth in 4:05.15.

Junior Ana Bogdanovski then placed fifth in the 500 Free as she touched in 5:16.71. Freshman Kristen Kaiser placed eighth with a time of 5:22.13. Junior Sammi Fox placed second in the 200 IM as she finished in 2:14.02 and classmateKylie Holden took seventh place with a time of 2:15.50. Senior Kylie Ternes just missed a first-place finish in the 50 Free by 0.16 seconds as she settled for second in a time of 24.60. Koh then finished in fifth in 24.91 and sophomore Megan Auzenbergs placed sixth in 25.17.

Hopkins closed out its night with second and third-place finishes in the 800 Free Relay. Rinsma, sophomore Ellen Marcus, McGrath and Bogdanovski finished in 7:49.05 for second place. The team of Kitayama, freshman Emily Lubin, Kaiser and Auzenbergs finished in 8:00.04 for third.

The second session of the Thomas Murphy Invitational continues at 10:00 am on Saturday, November 2. The third and final session will begin at 3:00 pm.

Day 2: Nov. 2, 2013

BALTIMORE, MD – The Johns Hopkins women’s swim team won eight of 13 swimming events to earn wins over Marywood and St. Francis (PA) at the annul Thomas Murphy Invitational. Hopkins defeated Marywood, 270-87, and St. Francis, 225-106, but suffered a 207-156 loss to host Loyola as the Blue Jays improve to 3-1 on the season.

Senior Taylor Kitayama led the way for the Blue Jays on the final day of the invitational with three individual wins while also swimming the lead off on the winning 400 Free Relay team. Junior Ana Bogdanovski also picked up a pair of individual wins, as well as swimming on the winning 200 and 400 Free Relay teams, to help the Blue Jays’ cause.

Hopkins kicked off the day by winning the 200 Free Relay, beating out Loyola by half a second. Bogdanovski, seniorsSarah Rinsma and Kylie Ternes and sophomore Megan Auzenbergs swam a winning time of 1:37.46. Finishing in a tie for third place with a time of 1:39.97 were freshmen Kailyn Koh and Pilar Shimizu, junior Melinda Yau and sophomoreEllen Marcus. Junior Sammi Fox then placed second in the 400 IM, clocking in at 4:42.48.

Kitayama and freshman Shirley Chan followed with a one-two finish in the 100 Fly. Kitayama took the top spot as she touched in 56.23, an NCAA provisional time, and Chan followed in 58.50. In the next event, Bogdanovski beat Loyola’s Caitlin Cronin to the wall by 0.21 seconds to win the 200 Free with a time of 1:54.74. Marcus placed fourth as she clocked in at 1:58.08. Kitayama picked up her second win of the day in the 100 Back, winning by nearly three seconds with an NCAA provisional time of 57.44. Sophomore Sean McGrath took third place with a time of 1:00.46.

Pilar then took third place in the 100 Breast with a time of 1:08.94. Freshman Lindsay Kriz was the top finisher for the Blue Jays in the 1650 Free, finishing in 18:35.31 for seventh place. Hopkins then took second and third in the 200 Medley Relay. Kitayama, Shimizu, junior Kylie Holden and Koh swam a time of 1:48.62, good for second place. While McGrath, Fox, freshman Abby Brown and Bogdanovski finished in third with a time of 1:50.04.

Kitayama completed her sweep of the backstroke events with a win in the 200 by more than five seconds. She touched in 2:03.97, an NCAA provisional time, and Fox placed second with a time of 2:09.41. Bogdanovski added another freestyle win to her credit as she took the top spot in the 100 with an NCAA provisional time of 51.80. Koh placed fourth with a time of 54.10 and Ternes followed in fifth just two-hundredths of a second later.

Freshman Helen Arose was the top Blue Jay in the 200 Breast with a time of 2:33.88, good for seventh place. Chan then won the 200 Fly in 2:06.88, nearly six seconds ahead of St. Francis’ Libby Francis. Her time is an NCAA provisional time and the seventh fastest in program history. Hopkins closed out the day with first and third-place finishes in the 400 Free Relay. Kitayama, Ternes, Rinsma and Bogdanovski swam a winning time of 3:33.13. Taking third place with a time of 3:38.41 were McGrath, Koh, Yau and Marcus.

Hopkins is idle for two weeks and will be back in action on November 22-23 at the Gettysburg Invitational.
